Fire bans are pretty regular (propane only, should be more than just a few inches off the ground, and sturdy/weighted/stable enough not to accidentally lightly kick it over when getting up).I see some recommended propane firepits, but cooking with grease getting onto their lava rocks or open burners would probably ruin it. Any recommendations with a medium form factor that won't take up a large portion of the trunk?

For Colorado, when in a fire ban, the number one rule is that it must have an 'OFF' switch. Solo stoves or variants thereof don't count. Thank you for caring to stay compliant when in a fire ban. I think it's gonna be a big/devastating fire season, just based on lower snow totals across the west (and obviously Canada, who's already enduring massive wildfires). Ignik makes a couple. Expensive unless you can get them on deep discount/prior season clearance. I have one I got for cheap and really like it. I don't cook on it though. Added some small gas fireplace logs and it is pretty nice to chill before bed with. Personally if there is a fire ban I won't bother with any open flame cooking. Grills and stoves only, but that is just me.

Anybody carry a little propane fire pit like this and hook it up to your exterior propane quick connect? It'd be nice to be able to sit around a fire, roast a few marshmallows, and not have to deal with the smoke.

I do, but I choose not to hook it up to the quick connect. Those things really go through the propane so I carry separate tanks so I don’t drain my onboard supply. Learned that lesson the hard way.

roast a few marshmallows Caution, a lot of these portable propane fire pits don't burn nearly as hot or as cleanly as a propane gas cooktop, and as a result, they put off a decent amount of soot. This can have a negative effect on the color, and the flavor, of marshmallows. :)

I'm looking at an option for the smokey wood campfire that is portable to pack on a long spring/summer overlanding trip.
Right now I'm focused on these three and would love to hear any personal experiences like how they hold up in general and how long they run on a 10/20 lb tank.

I have the Ignik and like it well enough. This would be my first portable propane firepit, so I don’t have a lot to compare it to. The Ignik hasn’t done wrong by me yet. I put a few of the Ignik brand “moon rock” in my can so I don’t have to look at that shiny gas-train. While compact and light, it doesn’t put off much heat. It has bailed me out of fire ban situations where sites wouldn’t allow wood burning, but they were okay with the propane. I’ve had mine for about a year and no issues and I mainly use it for my backyard as I enjoy a proper wood fire when I camp.

I just ordered the Howl R1 and intend to review it and make a video on it comparing it to my Ignik Firecan Elite. I like the IFE with moon rocks because you can keep it on low flame and get it nice and close to warm up the legs. As a party fire, not super great for heat+light- it’s good for one or the other one at a time. I think any of the fire options out there are more than enough light output- propane fires tend to be extremely bright, too bright for comfortable staring to be frankly honest. My own interest in the Howl R1 is how much radiant heat it actually puts out in comparison to the IFE with rocks- if it’s better, it’s objectively it will be a nicer fire overall due to not having to carry soot covered rocks and having a nicer flame in general.
