There’s no substitute for real fire... The electric ones can provide heat, are quick and easy to install; but it will always be fake fire. No matter how good it is, is lights and filters and pictures of fire. If the gas install is prohibitively expensive; then the propane option may make sense. At least around here, $1500 would install a lot of gas line; so I’d get a second option before going propane, myself. More on reddit.com

Do you have a 400lbs tank? That’s a lot of propane man. Ours was last filled back in November, we use it for evening comfort and morning warm ups and also use our propane for our gas range/oven and we haven’t ran out yet. I wouldn’t let that repair cost deter you, cost of owning a home and in terms of home repair, not expensive. Contractors need to charge minimums and to drive to job sites, if they just billed 15 minutes and drive around for free they would be under in no time. Also if that’s tax in with a part, that’s not out to lunch as small doesn’t mean cheap either. I like the propane, warms that living space quickly. Wood is nice, but fuck it’s a mess and a hassle. I’d have it in a cabin but not in the house. If you’re buying it, that isn’t cheap either and if you’re cutting it, it’s alot of time and commitment especially to build a stock of dry wood. I've had two houses with them (nat gas though), and there where no issues with the siding. The problem we had was that they where HOT. So we really could only run them for ~15 minutes, then had to turn them off as the room got too warm. So I wish the ones we had did a better job with lower heat output levels (or just a smaller fireplace). More on reddit.com
