The Montgomery Central Appraisal Distict identifies property to be taxed, determines its appraised value, whether to grant exemptions, the taxable owner and address, and which taxing jurisdictions may tax the property. The Montgomery County Tax Office receives the certified tax roll from the Montgomery Central Appraisal District, usually in July, then the property values are loaded on the Tax Office Computer System.

Texans, how do you justify paying so much in property tax?
Holy moly the property taxes are insane! I went to my hometown (in one of the lowest tax burden states) and accompanied a sibling to a few home tours and it really opened my eyes. A 300000 house in Texas is the same monthly payment as a 500000 house in my hometown. More on reddit.com

Anyone else have a massive increase in property taxes?
Protest it. With your neighbors stats in hand. And do you have a homestead exemption in place? Should limit your yearly increase if you qualify. Fighting property taxes is just part of living in Texas unfortunately. More on reddit.com

Property tax heat map. Darker the color, the higher the tax. Some Texans are planning to vote for Abbott again, despite him having 8 years to lower the taxes. Three people running against him offer viable plans to solve the issue. THREE. Itโ€™s not like we donโ€™t have choices.โ€
A couple of important points about Texas property tax that are worth bearing in mind: Texas has no state property tax - source . Property taxes are assessed by local governments such as counties and school districts. Those local governments fund their infrastructure and operating costs predominantly with property tax revenue, since they donโ€™t assess income tax, can keep only 2% of sales taxes, and cannot keep more than 30% of the fines they collect from traffic tickets. Following these points, if you reduce or eliminate property taxes point-blank, pretty much every city, county, and school system in Texas would lose their primary source of revenue. That means nearly every community in the state either goes into default overnight (most already operate at a loss due to their inefficient development pattern) or becomes reliant on the state and federal governments to fund the majority of their services. Nobody likes paying taxes, but the solution to rising housing costs and property taxes isnโ€™t as simple as getting rid of them entirely. The economic factors in play are far beyond my ability to speak to authoritatively, but just โ€œlowering property taxesโ€ isnโ€™t the no-brainer that a lot of people seem to think it is.
