The U.S. States With The Highest Property Tax Burden For Homeowners
Prop 13 in California massively distorts this for new buyers. Example, the house I rent now was purchased in 2004 for $1 million. At that time, the property tax was pegged to 1.3% of original the assessed value, which is $13,000 annually. Now, because prop 13 limits increases to 2% per yr, todays tax burden is calculated as $13k x 102% x 20 years, which is about $19.3k. However, the house is actually worth $2.5 million. If it was treated like most other states for an apples to apples comparison, the owner would be paying $32.5k. That is 68% higher, which is wild. More on reddit.com
