Color Systems Technology had contracted with Turner Entertainment to add color to 150 movies in Turner’s massive library of films originally made by MGM, Warner Bros. and RKO. Both Colorization, Inc. and Color System Technology wanted the Copyright Office to accept registrations for colorized (or “computer-colored”) versions. Colorization, Inc. had spent $260,000 for just the conversion to color of It’s a Wonderful Life, on which it was relying that (a) the original black-and-white film was in the public domain for lack of renewal, and (b) its own work would be protected from infringement by means of a copyright on their derivative version.

Some have been already, but a lot haven’t been and stayed in black and white only versions. For context, I am talking about films from before 1930(all of their copyrights have expired), films from 1930-1963 that had their copyrights expire when they weren’t renewed, and films from after that era(like NOTLD) that didn’t have a copyright notice.

Generally speaking, none of them. That said, going beyond just what's currently in PD, I've seen computer colorizations of animated shorts (e.g. B&W Looney Tunes) that were done alright, well even. Animated shorts like this for me are the 'exception' to the rule, considering budget reasons were a large part of why some cartoons were in color and others not within the same studio (although don't seek out redrawn colorizations, you might go blind). Using WB as an example again, the Merrie Melodies became full color in 1934 while the Looney Tunes stayed B&W until 1943, so it's always interesting to me what the early Looney Tunes shorts would have looked like had they managed to afford color for all WB's cartoons. Even with everything above though, said colorizations should NEVER replace the original B&W versions, the latter will always remain the default.
