r/publicdomain on Reddit: Before anyone else says "Public domain is useless!", you do realize what Disney's most popular movies are adapting, right?

Based on a delightful post about someone's infernal take, "Public domain is useless". So infernal, I just wonder why someone thought "public domain bad" was a good idea to post here. There's opinions, and then there's being salty when people have made an Alice in Wonderland adaptation over the years.

Hell, there's even historical and mythological stuff like Mulan and Hercules. While Disney's original characters + versions of these stories are still under their copyright, these original stories they adapt change over the years, so they technically also adapted Winnie the Pooh and Bambi.

Anyway, people should read pinned posts before they make more infernal takes. And realize the movies of their childhood ARE off of stories in public domain. Also probably why you'd see Arthurian legends, Frankenstein and Dracula everywhere.

P.S.: Found out the guy who made the "hot take" is a corporate shill, so he's absolutely miserable. Shout out to this one comment though that is the best response.

r/writing on Reddit: Help me understand public domain?
November 20, 2023 -

So from what I am to understand about public domain comes from Google -

The public domain is a category of creative works that are not protected by intellectual property laws. This includes copyright, trademark, or patent laws. The public owns these works, not the individual author or artist.

I was interested in an HP lovecraft project that I wanted to publish because as I am to understand his works are copyright free. Then I come across this interview where a director claims to "own" the re-animator films.

Can somebody explain what he is claiming to own? What assets are legally his that I'm not allowed to touch?

When ever the idea of copyright law comes up people bring up going into the public domain as it getting loss in a dark forest of suck for an eternity. But that’s not how it works.

Nothing stops something from continuing to work with a public domain property just that anyone else can also work with it.

When people say that “once it’s in the public domain it means that people can make shit with it. Like those shitty horror films”

Like being under copyright doesn’t stop things like that from happening. Warner Brothers released that Banana Splits FNAF ripoff movie as the proper rights owner.

Also of course the cheap shit riding on the fact they can use something like Micky Mouse legally gets made first. Making good art takes time and effort.

The idea that you need to protect the honor of Micky Mouse or Captain Marvel is so fucking stupid. Being under the lock and key of a huge corporation doesn’t mean they are “safe” from “desecration” whatever that is.

Not to mention when in the public domain anyone can make their own version of it.

Which means no “cannon”.

r/publicdomain on Reddit: Public Domain Alternatives
August 22, 2024 -

Hello everyone!

After a few month trial we have decided to allow general posts requesting Public Domain Alternatives again. We noticed a tick down in people actually getting a response to their requests in the larger master thread, so we wanted to work to have people get the replies they wanted. We do recommend that you attempt to search for similar inquiries to your question before posting again.

As always it is a work in progress to moderate since we are just humans with our own lives and do this for fun in our free time. Thank you for understanding, and please feel free to reach out if you have questions.

Best,

The mods

Do people like this just not understand that the foundation of just about everything they've ever experienced was available to them because of public domain?

I can't seem to wrap my head around thinking like this kind of thinking.
