Tonight I learned the hard way that if Public Storage says the facility closes as 9:00 pm, the gate locks and will not let you out after 9:00 pm. You are literally stuck. The gates will let you in at 8:59 and then not let you leave at 9:00. If you find yourself stuck, the best thing to do is call the local police. They often have access to an override code. In my case, the override code didn't work, but the cop new that Public Storage owners live on the facility and went and woke her up. She had the proper override code and was surprisingly friendly for being woken up by a police officer at 11:30pm.

How do you feel about your access hours? My facility is assessable from 6am to 7pm, my office hours from 9am to 6pm. We used to offer extended hours to any tenant from 5am to 9pm for an additional cost but I found that it became party city after the office closed. More on selfstoragetalk.com

We went ahead and rented a studio space to store all our gear, it doubles an office. If you don't need the office component then look on Craigslist for a garage or basement storage space. I see them pop up all the time. More on reddit.com
