Highlighting themes should not matter. They are largely personal preference. Me and the senior I work under use different themes, and even different configurations of Webstorm (I use the Classic plugin, they use the new layout), and there have never been any problems collaborating. Anyone remotely experienced should be able to adjust almost instantly to a different color scheme. I couldn't actually tell you what color, for example, keywords are in the theme I use off the top of my head. It's an automatic thing my brain picks up on when I'm reading code. You could probably subtely change the theme, and I wouldn't be able to tell you what exactly was wrong, but I'd still be able to read the code fine. More on reddit.com

Python does not control the colours of error messages - the terminal app does that. Check the documentation for your terminal application. Most terminals allow colours / themes to be configured, though unortunately the Windows terminal (cmd.exe) is rather limited in this respect. For using Python interactively (on Windows), iPython offers much more customisation. For running scripts, it may be time to start using a Python IDE. Thonny is a great option for beginners as it includes Python and is very easy to set up and start coding - just install the app and away you go. There are also more advanced IDE's, including PyCharm, vs-code, Wing, IDLE, and others, but they have a steeper learning curve. More on reddit.com

I'm new to programming, taking my first Python class at community college. I'm loving it so far and doing well in the class. But I am largely ignorant of industry standards, and I don't want to remain so, as I need the academia to translate to a career.

Currently I'm wondering if there is a/a set of "standard" code highlighting color schemes? We're using PyCharm for our class, and I'm not happy with how many elements are just plain white. I started playing around with changing colors for global and local variables, for parameters, Class names, etc. A fellow student pointed out that choosing my own colors might mess me up later down the line when I'm having to use a different IDE, collaborate, or look at code written by others. They think I should learn the "standard" color theme, but does that even exist? I can't find much evidence of one.

I'm considering just using something from Dracula Theme. Thoughts on this?

They have no idea what they're talking about, to a downright hilarious degree. I'm actually curious how they possibly came to hold such a view. In reality: No one remembers what color represents what. And people change their colorschemes on a whim. It's all aesthetics. The only purpose is that there is some color to help highlight stuff, but it does not matter at all that you remember what color represents what. And obviously you can still read code in a different colorscheme. It's code, it's text for crying out loud. Choose colors, or a colorscheme, that looks good to you. Change it when you get bored.
