r/cybersecurity on Reddit: Python for Cybersecurity
April 4, 2024 -
Hello,
I've been in the cybersecurity space for 10 years but haven't ever touched Python. I'm seeing this is a thing that is required for new roles as of late. Can some of you point me in the right direction to learn Python specifically for cyber roles. I'm going to need this but I'm not exactly sure where to start. I don't see the point in building an "insult generator" or some "moving snake", I don't think those things are going to translate into what I NEED to learn. Thanks.

Learn how to use the requests, json, and datetime modules to start working with APIs. There are others but you can get away with a lot using those. Learning how to automate tasks using the APIs of your various tools will pay off immensely.

Best resources to start learning python for cybersecurity and automation
You sort of have to learn how to build things that arnt security related to understand what’s going on with python. I wouldn’t expect to build a port scanner if you don’t understanding what a library is. I would honestly say, if you just want to hit the ground running you could probably have any LLM walk you through some basics while you look for a course More on reddit.com
Python for Cybersecurity
Python for cyber security is still a very wide net and is still not very specific. But I'd say what you learnt is already a good starting point, you might want to add binary manipulation and operations on to your skill set, also how to use a socket. Those are usually used for red teaming, nowadays I never touched that because we have other teams who handle it so idk if it's still relevant. But I think most pentest today are using http anyway.
