To me, the most natural solution would be using the built-in sum and map functions, with a lambda function that takes the second item in every tuple.

I have an array which looks like

a = [0,0,0,0,1,0,1,1,0,1,0,0,1]    # Etc, maybe 100 cells long.

And I want to know how many 1s there are in the array.

I could do a for loop

for i in range(a)
    if a[i] == 1:
    number_of_cars += 1

But if there is a function that does this in one, it would be great, tidy and efficient.

If the array is 2D, using nested for loops to count the number of 1's is going to become quickly inefficient.

maybe: a.count(i) I don't know how that works with nested lists though... At any rate, if you want to flatten a list maybe try something like: from itertools import chain A = chain.from_iterable(a) A.count(i) There's also a sum() builtin function that adds up all the items in an iterable.
