r/learnpython on Reddit: Where do I learn currently using w3schools tutorials
October 7, 2024 -

Ok so I’ve tried a few free resources to learn Python but the only one I’m fully understanding is w3schools yet it has a bad rep.

But they break it down into small steps, explain well & you can check the answers - I’ve found with a lot of these Python courses you can’t check the answers so if you get stuck that’s it.

I really want to know what is something as easy as w3schools Python tutorials are that’s got a better reputation? Also, is there any advantage of finishing the tutorials? I’m up for the part about learning more about how dictionaries work in Python.

I kinda need to Python for idiots - online but also with projects that start off at an incredibly basic level & I could say save to GitHub or similar would be a plus. But I need it to have a LOT of handholding. Help?

Thanks in advance!

yet it has a bad rep. I disagree. W3Schools is an excellent "quick reference" to common functions and methods for many popular languages, including Python. I would not recommend it as your main source of learning - a well structured course is much better, but it is an easy to use and easy to understand resource for looking things up. I find the "Try it yourself" examples particularly helpful as it allows you to try out variations and edge cases to see more clearly how things work. For structured courses, check out the resources on the learnpython wiki

Everyone learns differently. Some people read books from start to finish, others skip around. Whatever path you choose make sure to physically type as much as you can and change the code and experiment. You can always create something. For example if you learn loops create a program that accepts an integer and displays an n by n square of asterisks. For example if n = 4 then the output would be: **** * * * * **** This may sound silly but it is great practice. Of course later you could implement tic tic toe, game of life, using a weather API but at the beginning it's great to solve simple problems. w3schools is great if you connect to it. As long as you're actively programming then you are on the right track. For additional resources check out Harvard CS50p - which is also gentle University of Helsinki course (text based along with video and covers quite a bit) Python and Data Science - (Disclaimer: This is my course and assumes no programming background) The book: “Learn Python the Hard Way”. I really like this book despite the intimidating title, but there are other books.
