r/MagSafe on Reddit: So, just to be clear, Qi2 and Magsafe is the same thing right? Just named different because Magsafe is Apple?
February 3, 2024 -

I know Qi1 is limited to 7.5W charging speeds. And Qi2 is 15W. Magsafe is 15W as well.

I'm getting the S24U with the DBrand Magsafe case. However, trying to find a charger I actually like is difficult.

There's some Magsafe chargers I like, but want to make sure it'll still charge my phone at the faster speeds.

Understanding MagSafe (15W), Qi2, and MagSafe 25W
I think you got this wrong on some points. This is how I see it- OG MagSafe ( based on the QI standard) - will charge any current/modern iPhone( that accepts wireless charging 8 and newer) , older than 12 will get 5-7.5 watts of speeds 12 - 15 will get the maximum of 15 watts. QI2 (based on MagSafe, but like you said an open standard.) Allows any QI2 enabled device to get all the benefits of MagSafe as well as a maximum of 15 watts. Also is touted as great heat management as well as actively throttling to preserve the health of your battery from heat degradation. Qi 2 is also backwards compatible with QI1 and also has alll the benefits of MagSafe, many iPhones that can take MagSafe will see qi 2 chargers as basically MagSafe. New version of MagSafe (25 watts) This new version is basically as it says 25 watts. Apple basically made it only 16 and newer, older iPhones such as the 15 and before will only charge at 15 watts. There are no third party accessories yet that are certified as the new MagSafe standard. Basically treating it like how it was when the original MagSafe was released. TLDR - MagSafe (Original) /= QI2 MagSafe (25W) is not QI2, however I’m sure MagSafe (25) would recognize a potential “QI2” device, however the only devices currently out that technically “SUPPORT” QI2 are the 13 and up… which again support MagSafe. Therefore QI2 = MagSafe (OG) More on reddit.com

Answer: It is Qi1 plus a magnetic attachment plus a tiny bit of ID info passed from the charger to the phone or whatever you are charging.
