I am doing applied statistics and haven’t found any easy to understand definitions for qualitative and quantitative variables, and maybe some other terms as well. There aren’t any easy definitions in the college text book either. I am really falling behind in class.
Are you able to give me an easy definition?
What are resources that teach applied statistics in an easy to understand manner? Perhaps with laymen terms or a plain speaking manner.

In terms of statistics, qualitative data are things where our numbers are arbitrary and have no “mathematical value” For example, I ask about favorite colors and make it so Blue = 1 Red = 2 Green = 3 I COULD try to do 3 + 1 here, but that makes no sense because Green + Blue makes no sense. This is qualitative data in the stats class context. It’s another term talking about categorical or nominal data. I suggest you use khan academy to help you with practice problems and tutorial videos. If you’re really struggling with intro stats, it’ll be more helpful than a textbook

No that is absolutely 100% wrong. Those sizes are not quantitative data and mistaking this kind of 'quantitized' data for actual quantitative data is among the most common mistakes in statistics. Data is only really quantitative if there is an actual quantity being measured. Height, weight, number of something, duration. Things like 'rate on a scale from one to ten' are actually quanlitative data masking as quantitative data. There is no scale calibration, no useful sense in which a 4 is 'twice as good' as a 2. One has simply used numbers to create the illusion of measurement. Applying, say, a linear regression to this sort of data is going to be questionable at best, misleading at worst. Now if those sizes weren't made up, but an actual body measurement, like mens pants or suits, then you've got quantitative data. A result of this is that a great deal of statistical reasearch done by amateurs in business contexts is pretty untrustworthy. It is no surprise to me a instructor got this wrong. I'm honestly very impressed you saw through it. Most people actually believe throwing numbers into something makes it magically rigorous. You are now definitely smarter than most MBAs! Qualitative data would be something like an observational study, or a study that involves you interviewing someone about their experiences etc. Quantitative data is some sort of measure like time, or amount. While some stuff may appear qualitative (like your example) things like surveys are often used quantitatively by the researcher (eg any response ‘very bad’ is given a 0 and ‘very good’ is given a 7 in the analysis). This is a very simplified answer but If you offered options for answers (what is your favorite color? A. Blue B. Green C. Red) you have done quantitative research. You can tally and count quantitative responses. Qualitative research would be if you audio/video recorded an interview with participants asking broader questions about their experiences for example and coded the transcripts to find themes in their answers.
