I would look at R and see if there are libraries to do what you want. Very powerful skill that you can take anywhere. The learning curve is steep, if you don't know any other programming languages, expect a 3-6 month beginner phase. Tons of resources online though, you will not get stuck. More on reddit.com

I used Atlas.Ti for my dissertation. Its a semester based subscription model, and they had a special COVID discount over the summer so I made full use of it. There's a free trial that you can use on limited documents to see if you like it. I never really used NVivo so I can't compare, but based on reviews I read online they seem to be about similar in terms of ability and functions, it just looks different. My interviews were separate word documents, and you basically import them into the interface, and they appear as tabs. Its a little annoying if you have a ton (I had 11 documents), but there's a quick drop down menu to navigate to the document you need. More on reddit.com

I have been trying to shop around, but it seems like the most popular one doesn't work on mac, and I'm worried about not being able to effectively back up my data with some of the options I've seen.
My situation is that I'm writing ethnographic fieldnotes, so I want to have the ability to make discrete entries, but ideally also the option to code them.
I am also open to suggestions for free software/websites that would be useful for essentially making diary entries, which can easily be flipped through, and later inputted into maxqda when I eventually shell out for a license.
I may just end up using google docs, but it's very frustrating that my university doesn't provide licenses for this stuff. If you have any advice on how to get my university to pay for it that's also helpful!

As libraries for R, there are two qualitative options RQDA and QCoder https://github.com/ropenscilabs/qcoder#using-qcoder (If you're not going to ever use R again...don't bother with either.) Free, simple and decent enough is QualCoder https://qualcoder.wordpress.com/how-to-use/ A lesser MaxQDA/NVivo/ATLAS.ti rival, QDAMiner offers a free (slimmed down) version of its tool called QDAMiner Lite https://provalisresearch.com/products/qualitative-data-analysis-software/freeware/ And, finally, there's a cloud-based free solution cutely called Taguette: https://app.taguette.org/ But, as others indicated, I'd press for funding/coverage by your advisor/department/university for one of the proprietary tools.
