[Question] How to Make Qualitative Research More Scientifically Rigorous?
I do qualitative research for psychology - there are a lot of papers detailing various analysis methods. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), Grounded Theory, and Thematic Analysis are the main ones. There are also guidelines in qualitative methodology that go into doing successful interviews and techniques... SAGE have an encyclopedia on qualitative methods that's very good. I hope this was helpful. I love qualitative stuff. More on reddit.com

Help! Interview protocol for qualitative research:
I can't really do your work for you, but I would suggest finding other research on a similar topic and see what sort of questions they may have asked. For that matter, what is your research question? is it about alienation? Self identity? etc? For qualitative research there are a few tricks that come in handy: learning to probe the crap out of open ended questions (Some of these are really specific, but they could be like: could you tell me a little bit more? How does that compare against X thing you were talking about before? Describe how you felt while that was happening?) Learn to listen and mask your reactions. Its hard to not engage in a conversation with the person sometimes, especially if you odn't agree. But people love talking and they like being heard, and if they feel you are paying attention and are picking up on everything they are saying, they are more likely to keep talking. Your first interviews will probably suck. I am no expert at them yet either, as I've only done 10 or 20, but it takes practice to get good. If you gave me a specific topic to work with or question ideas you may have already I could probably help you build up from there. More on reddit.com

Why is qualitative research looked down upon in academia?
There is a deep bias/assumption that qualitative research is fundamentally subjective, which goes against psychology's drive for objectivity. And many people falsely assume quantitative is always objective. More on reddit.com

June 26, 2023 -

Hi! I'm an undergrad, going into grad school next year for clinical psy. I'm trying to bolster my research literacy, and am looking to dig in by actually reading and studying peer reviewed research. My issue is, I wanted to focus this search for materials by first looking at some well known or impactful studies, field research in social sciences, maybe things I should already know about by the time I'm in grad school that would be helpful (other than stanford prison, Asch etc). But many google searches have just given me "Jane Goodall". I will read it, but I know there's more out there. What do you think I should start with, or influenced/helped you when you started out? Thanks in advance!

:Edit: So I have taken a "research methods in social sciences class", where I had to put together a research proposal including a literature review, where of course I had to read and analyze plenty of peer reviews articles (plus there was some philosophy of science stuff in there that was awesome). Plus, I've just generally had to read them for other various classes. Sorry if I made it sound like I've never read a peer reviewed article before. Just looking for the greatest hits I suppose, or ones that really helped move you along in your own journey.
