How do I get a quant internship?
Community college isn't the disqualifier. Berkeley is not competitive because its curriculum is just that much better at teaching math. These places produce quants because they are prestigious and therefore the top math students, who can basically pick where they want to go, choose them. > Is being really good at coding an absolute must? Good is so subjective. You don't need to be a competitive leetcoder to work as a QT/QR. QD does want that. But you shouldn't struggle with reading or writing code. For context, I was probably one of the worst coders in QR at my firm when I started. I grinded leetcode and my current skill level is that I can "solve" most medium-hards in under 20 minutes (not runtime OR memory optimal). I am now probably average. You should not struggle to code. > Can anybody speak from experience or share relevant anecdotes about people you know who have landed a good internship without being like a super special standout student? Yes. He was a Public Policy major (target school still) recruited for a sport he spent 4 years benchwarming. His dad is a booster for the team who also happens to be one of the top 5? donors to the school and also happens to be a founder of the fund. This kid isn't dumb but I am very unsure what he does on a day to day. More on reddit.com

No prior quant internships, am I cooked?
Yes, based on what I was told by my dad and older friends that I need to do quant internship, the sooner the better. I have started my internship with a smallish quant fund (my dad’s friend runs it). Hopefully the experience I gain there will help me get into the internship programs those large pod shops run later. More on reddit.com

What majors are best for quant internships?
Math, physics, computer science, statistics, and engineering are common. But some economics and philosophy majors get in too, if they’re strong at problem solving and math competitions.

Is it true that comp is really high for quant internships?
Yes. Interns at top quant firms like Jane Street, Citadel, or Two Sigma can earn $10–15k/month, with housing and perks. That’s because these firms are competing for top talent against Big Tech and other elite trading shops.

How should I prepare for quant finance interviews?
Study probability, combinatorics, brainteasers, and mental math. Practice on sites like Leetcode, but also read Paul Wilmott books or work through Jane Street puzzles. Mock interviews help, many firms test logic, not just code.

r/quantfinance on Reddit: How do I get a quant internship?
February 4, 2025 -

Already posted on another subreddit, sorry if that's frowned upon but I don't use Reddit often and I'm eager for some feedback. My apologies if some of these questions seem stupid, I have very little knowledge of getting internships in general, let alone very competitive ones.

For context, I am currently attending community college in California and have guaranteed admission to UCLA, Berkeley, and UCSD. I have a 3.6 GPA, no academic achievements other than dean's list all four semesters at CC, and I'm an applied math major. Only one internship that wouldn't be notable to any big tech or quant company. I'm super motivated, I'm a good self-teacher, and quant finance is my number one choice for potential careers at this point in my life. The role that seems the most appealing to me is trading but I'm open to anything I'm competitive for at the top firms

1.) Are the highest echelons of quant finance, (Jane Street, Optiver, HRT, Jump, etc.) so ultra-competitive that I don't even stand a chance having gone to CC? Am I screwed right from the app screening phase just by virtue of having gone to CC even though I will finish my last two years of uni at a great school?

2.) Given my university options will be all California schools, is Berkeley my only choice to be truly competitive in these interviews? I haven't seen anybody on here nor YouTube talk about how they got into quant finance from anywhere other than Berkeley (as far as California colleges go).

3.) Is being really good at coding an absolute must? I have seen some people say that depending on the role you apply for you, won't get any coding questions in your technical interviews. I've also heard others say that no matter what you have to be pretty talented to even have a chance, completely irrespective of the role you're applying for. Are there good roles that only require proficiency as opposed to absolute mastery?

4.) Can anybody speak from experience or share relevant anecdotes about people you know who have landed a good internship without being like a super special standout student? I have never competed in a math competition, I'm decent at coding but not amazing for my age (2nd year college), I have zero industry connections or relevant experience other than doing lots of math and coding in my free time,

For anybody who read this post and took the time to respond, I thank you very much. I am incredibly excited to try and pursue quant finance.

These are unqualified observations and suggestions from another student: The true quants are evident by freshman year - math comp, comp sci EC projects coding algorhythms, trading experience....targeted by companies after undergrad Smart people could develop the skills by adding masters/phd in stats, math, data sci, ... Get off reddit for advice and get on LinkedIn - study the profiles of success - follow their leads Follow the posts on LinkedIn - filled with info and ideas Modify your goals based on reality - no sense sneaking your way in to suffer from imposter syndrome After modifying goals, you will find LOTS of various roles in finance that utilize the quant skills in less intense and pure variations - and you might find a better fit. - ie from what I can see, quants in banks are not the same roles as quants in trading - but more balanced and with better exit options Know your strengths and follow them at your own pace - you sound motivated - get internships that add experience - not just quant Learn general finance - it will open lots of doors with your quant skills or any technical skills (a must) UCB or UCLA will be great - keep exploring - I am sure you will find a fit.
