Think about how much maths you learned in your first year. About how A-level pales in comparison. You're competing with people who have done one, two or even three more years of university education on top of that, maybe even PhDs if it's a research internship you're going for. Two Sigma is a particularly sought-after firm. Even with your creds, perhaps your CV didn't present you very well either. When I first applied, my CV was four pages long (lmao). More on reddit.com

Ditch LC completely and focus on trading. I interned at FAANG and I couldn’t see myself doing SWE for long so I pivoted to trading. There’s 5 main topics for trading Brain teasers (go read in green book/online) Probability (take a probability class - R.V, distributions, expected value, variance) Market-making (learn what is making a market, practice making a market on things like number of cabs in NYC, or number of windows WTC has) Mental math (practice zetamac) Option theory (this is for places like Optiver/Akuna, but always good to know. Take Akuna’s Options 101, free online) I interviewed with JS, HRT (algo dev), Citadel, Optiver, IMC, Flow, D.E. Shaw (quant analyst), DRW, Jump, SIG, Virtu, Akuna, Five Rings and landed 3 offers. Got maybe 1 LC style question in all my interviews. More on reddit.com

I came across Optiver’s Summer 2026 quant trader internship, which pays 65-80k for 10 weeks, basically an annualized 338-416k and is consistent with levels.fyi.
Their full-time base salary (e.g., graduate quantitative researcher, PhD) is only around 175k (of course, performance bonus is not included here). Meanwhile, other prop shops like JS/HRT/Jump pay 300k for both interns and new grads.
Why would Optiver pay such a crazy high intern salary but much lower for new grad roles?
My guess is they’re using the internship to attract top talent and convert them to full time, but if full time compensation is lower than JS/Jump/HRT, wouldn’t many interns just leave for higher-paying firms anyway?
