ELI5: Quantitative research.
Quantitative research is when you are measuring social issues you collect numbers (quantities) instead of abstract responses. So, if you were trying to survey people to find out how happy they are you would ask them to rate their happiness on a scale of 1-10 instead of simply giving them a box to write a freeform answer in.

How do I get myself into a Quantitative Research role at places like Jane Street and Two Sigma?
Courses are relevant, (can't comment on specifics). Research areas can be far and wide ie Renaissance Technologies recruited speech recognition experts as their first employees so my advice is just excel in your field and be prepared to speak on it. Any projects related to the markets would be a plus but not necessary. There are a bunch of quant interview guides (one specifically related to Jane Street) as well. More on reddit.com

This is a very hard field to break into, and no one should try to go this route without a backup. Also, a lot of people want to go into this field for the pay. While I won't deny it pays lucratively, the attitude of maximizing the amount of money that you make is 1. generally poor for your mental health (there's always a higher earner than you out there), and 2. the root cause of a lot of fucked up things in this world. Finance gets a bad rep among the public because of shitty people with shitty morals (quants, traders, PMs, CEOs all included), and **I wish the worst possible consequences on those in any industry who seek to enrich themselves at society's cost. ** Preach, I'm really glad someone said it More on reddit.com

What Is Quantitative Research? | Definition, Uses & Methods
June 22, 2023 - Correlational and experimental research can both be used to formally test hypotheses, or predictions, using statistics. The results may be generalized to broader populations based on the sampling method used. To collect quantitative data, you will often need to use operational definitions that translate abstract concepts (e.g., mood) into observable and quantifiable measures (e.g., self-ratings of feelings and energy levels).

(PDF) An Overview of Quantitative Research Methods
August 24, 2023 - Drawing from a critical synthesis of existing literature, the study argues that mixed methods research extends beyond procedural combination to embody an ethos of epistemic inclusivity-one that enhances validity, credibility, and interpretive richness. By bridging the quantitative emphasis on measurement and generalization with the qualitative focus on meaning and context, MMR facilitates deeper, multidimensional insights that reflect the complexity of human and social systems. The paper concludes by underscoring the imperative for institutional support, interdisciplinary collaboration, and researcher reflexivity to sustain MMR as a transformative mode of inquiry.
