Anyone use a Japanese floor mattress (futon)? Thinking of switching to this.

I slept on futons in Japan and then America for about 3 years. What makes a futon work is the floor it sits on. In Japan it's springy tatami mats. When I had a vaulted wood floor under mine in America, it was great. When I had it on carpet over concrete, it was unusable. You will also need to air out the futon not infrequently, which could be an issue depending on your space. Just fyi. I would not go back to a futon. But I am going to get a thick American style futon mattress to have in the nursery for when my toddler wants to snuggle to sleep, once I move my gel mattress off the floor of the nursery and back to my own room. I got the set including the duvet and pillow and I'm very happy with sleeping this way. Please Dear, no futons. We all are over our dorm days. I have suffered on a futon myself and would not inflict that kind of suffering on someone else. Unless you just really want to target large groups of 19-year-olds as your intended guests. In that case, the cheaper the better! Don't forget some empty cardboard boxes as side-tables. Where can I find a good QUEEN-sized futon.

Soaring Heart has some good futons and shikibutons on there, though they're pricey. Their latex, wool and cotton futon option seems like it would definitely be a good choice, too, if that's something you're interested in. White Lotus Home also makes some really good futons/organic mattresses but they are definitely on the higher-end of the price-bracket. Good luck :) More on reddit.com

We tried sleep training and decided it wasn't for us (but still zero judgement for those who do it, and I'm not willing to argue with anyone here about it) so we will be continuing to co-sleep.

Because of this, our queen bed isn't going to work for our family anymore. My husband wants to buy a king, but I'm curious about a Japanese floor mattress instead. He said he could be game. I like the idea of being able to roll it up and put it away during the day and have more space for *activities* during the day

I also like that they're available made of more natural materials and much less expensive than a king sized bed.

Anyway, anyone have experience with this? Brands you like, how was the lifestyle change etc?

We have two of these for sleepovers. I slept on them a few times. It was not a great experience. Even doubling them up was no help. My hips and back were crying for a regular bed after.

My dad always preferred pullouts/futons over beds, but recently he’s been really over having a subpar mattress, and it’s starting to affect his back. (It’s been like 20 years and he’s in his 50s now.) An option that we’re looking into is a Murphy bed for him, because it’s a pullout but it still utilizes a sturdy mattress that doesn’t have to bend at all! Maybe consider looking into Murphy beds as a potential option too?
