r/Bedding on Reddit: what’s the difference between a comforter, a quilt, and a duvet cover?
June 19, 2024 -

Hi, so i’ve never know the differences between a comforter, a quilt, and a duvet cover. I’ve always grown up sleeping in comforters. I’ve looked up the difference but it didn’t make sense in words so maybe someone can explain it better? lol I been wanting a new bed set and wondering which material is more cooling but also soft and not scratchy. I have felt a small baby quilt blanket at a craft fair before and it doesn’t seem very soft or malleable. I have sensory issues so finding a bedspread is annoying lol 😂

It sounds like you might be more interested in learning about the different kinds of weaving, thread counts, and fibers. Sateen, for instance, is a way to weave threads together and it feels very smooth compared to other ways of weaving the exact same threads. Some people claim they’re warmer, but I don’t notice it. Percale is the more typical weave for sleeping cool, then there are others like Jersey which make for soft but very warm sheets. For fibers I’m sure you know of silk and cotton, there’s a few types of cotton too where there are longer fibers and thus a generally stronger cotton. Linen is another to check out for sure, then of course there’s synthetics like polyester and rayon. A bunch of things try to say they’re bamboo or some shit, but iirc it’s really just rayon that happens to have been produced with bamboo. In my experience synthetics feel cool to the touch at first but the sleeping experience from the lower breathability and wicking makes synthetics the hottest sheets for their thickness. Silk is almost in the middle, smooth but natural and yet not as breathable. Once you have sheets that feel good, you might not care about what goes on top so much, but if you do I’d say your best bet might be with duvet covers since it is easier imo to find ones made of similar fabrics as the sheets.

Quilt vs Comforter - The Quilting Forum - Missouri Star's Quilt Community
Hello Friends! When is a quilt a quilt and when is it a comforter? I have read that tied quilts are not really quilts, but yet some folks call them quilts if they have pieced tops. Other folks are more strict and say you can't call it a quilt if there are no quilting stitches keeping the layers ... More on forum.missouriquiltco.com

Cumulus Comforter XL as a double quilt

I have the Cumulus Comforter XL700 and I'm very happy with it. I mostly use it tent camping with my girlfriend (including this recent winter break in Belgium), sometimes in the hammock. No problem in 0-5C weather, there is plenty of room, and it has drawstrings to limit the draft.

How many of you guys use a quilt for bedding?
You should check the quilt guide that Bed Bath and Beyond has right on their site: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/guide/buying-guide-to-quilts-coverlets/pubbbg520019 Like they said, quilts won't be as warm as a comforter so if that is a concern, I would reconsider. You can always do both a comforter and a quilt if you want. My set up is a synthetic comforter, a down comforter, and a wool blanket.
