The default is too high IMO, I feel like 60% is the highest setting that doesn't look over-processed. Generally I run with 50%. I'm running a 27" 1080/144 monitor, though. Monitors with higher res might handle stronger sharpening better. Answer from tobascodagama on reddit.com

December 30, 2022 - Dynamically sharpening the image in this way means that you can run a game at a lower resolution but get a final image that looks closer to a much higher resolution without taking a performance hit.

June 30, 2022 -

I have it set currently at 50%, i'm using a ips 1440p monitor so i'm not sure what you guys are using.

Does it create any bad artifacts if you have it on too high?. I mostly play mmorpg, fps, rts games.

r/Amd on Reddit: Virtual Super Resolution and Radeon Image Sharpening on a 1080p monitor - Control
April 9, 2020 -

So, I've been doing some research and it's still quite confusing to me. To preface this, I'm using a 5700XT to play Control on a 1080p monitor.

I've been supersampling with VSR to 1440p and, with some settings tweaks, I'm able to maintain an average FPS of 70 which is fine. However, I just read up on RIS and I'm wondering what the best approach is to both maximize image quality AND performance (FPS.)

First, I supersampled to 1440p and turned on RIS at both 80% and 100% and, well, I couldn't notice a difference at all. I know it's mostly noticeable when downsampling but I figured I'd at least see some marginal improvement but alas.

To clarify:

  • Will the image quality be on par with 1440p if I keep the resolution at 1080p but turn on RIS?

  • Is there a point to using RIS when supersampling?

  • If RIS is recommended, under what circumstances (1080p? 1440P?) and are there any graphical settings I should adjust to avoid "conflicting" with RIS?

I've been watching countless videos and running tests and I still can't quite understand what is the best approach

Question - Radeon super resolution | Tom's Hardware Forum
January 5, 2025 - https://www.amd.com/en/products/software/adrenalin/radeon-super-resolution.html Super resolution is basically if you’ve got a game not running well you’re supposed to be able to set it to a lower resolution in the game and use the AMD driver to upscale it back to the monitor’s native resolution. They do state if the gave has fsr, that would be better to use though. Image sharpening I think is just supposed to help clean up the image for better visuals.

There doesn't seem to be any post-processing effects blurrying it, it looks like it's just a matter of sharpness

Testing AMD's new Radeon Image Sharpening: Is It Better than Nvidia's DLSS? | TechSpot
July 12, 2019 - Downsampling all the way to 1440p didn't deliver as good results, so the sweet spot is around that 70 to 80 percent resolution scale. RIS is also good for sharpening up games that can are left a little soft after post-process anti-aliasing techniques like TAA. Given basically all games these days use this sort of AA as opposed to more intensive techniques like MSAA or SSAA, combining that with sharpening can deliver an improved image. It's also clear that Radeon Image Sharpening is a superior equivalent to Nvidia's DLSS, often by a considerable margin.
