I just have to say this because I feel I'm taking crazy pills. It's one thing to be able to convey emotions, or deliver a line; Rami's fine doing that.
BUT it's a fundamentally different thing to play a real person. Usually, when actors play real people, they study the way they spoke, moved, etc. and try to recreate that. Now, I've been a fan of Queen long enough to remember when Freddie was with us, and I've seen and heard all his TV and radio interviews. It boggles my mind how devoted fans, who I can only assume have also watched them, can say that Rami Malek did a wonderful job playing Freddie Mercury.
I'm not trying to start a fight, I just genuinely don't understand it. To start, Freddie had a very specific speech pattern (almost a stutter of sorts at times), a way of moving his hands, of gesturing, of walking, of standing. A very particular way of performing as well, which I don't think can be captured by simply copying some steps. The Live Aid scene during the movie is absolutely cringe worthy, I'm sorry. Freddie looked confident, relaxed, and like he was having a great time. Rami looked nervous and awkward. What was up with his mouth? Why was he looking nervously at the crowd? You're playing Freddie fucking Mercury! The stage is your natural habitat!
The scene where they play Crazy Little Thing... (I think they cut it from the movie), what was Malek doing at the end with the guitar? Everyone that watches that for the first time thinks Freddie was gonna smash the guitar. Malek doesn't even try to give that impression.
Those famous chords at the beginning of the ballad section in Bohemian Rhapsody? He butchered that, absolutely terrible. He literally could've been taught how to place his hands and move his fingers on the piano in an hour or less. His right hand in particular is all wrong, but hey, let's praise how "accurately" they recreated everything.
Literally many of the scenes had Malek playing a stereotype of a gay man that could've been anyone.
Freddie had a habit of moving his upper lip to cover his teeth, it's very noticeable. Where's that? Any of his mannerisms at all?
They gave Malek those god-awful teeth that Freddie was so self conscious about, but did nothing about his eye color because the eye contacts bothered Malek. Really? Dude, you're playing a man that worked while literally dying and probably in more pain than any of us would like to admit, does that not inspire you at all to go through a little trouble? Actors have lost dangerous amounts of weight to play other roles and he couldn't be bothered with eye contacts.
I just don't get the praise. Yes, he delivered the lines. It that all it takes? That's a very low bar they set for one of the greatest musicians in recent history. And yes, he got awards for it. Everyone with a brain knows if you do a half decent job at playing a very famous person you're likely to win awards.
Please know that I went to see the movie ready to love it, I'd been waiting for it for years! I don't enjoy the fact that I was so disappointed with it.

The Little Things just came out on HBOmax (and I think possibly theatres too?). Rami Malek was really great in it. I’m always impressed by how great of a storyteller he is even when he has no lines.
The movie was ok though, kind of a let down tbh. It’s always nice to see Rami on screen though.
