Linear is better for gaming, clicky is better for typing. On a linear you might accidentally press some keys you didn’t mean to while typing since it’s so easy and there’s no bump to even let you know you just typed a letter in. On a clicky, the bumps can get annoying when trying to do really fast keypresses like let’s say strafing left and right in a shooter to avoid getting shot. So I’d say determine which is more important to you in the long run. Keep in mind if you’re mainly playing like RPG’s or single player games (or you don’t really care about being competitive) you don’t really need the advantage linear switches give you. Oh and also linear is silent while clicky is loud. If you’re unsure whether the loudness would bother you I’d recommend heading to a Best Buy or Walmart, they almost always have them on display to type on. Also I don’t know anything about the Naha or Naga x lol but if I had an old viper I would definitely upgrade to a newer viper, so I guess I would say upgrade Answer from SaulsaDip on reddit.com

r/razer on Reddit: Red or Purple switches Huntsman TKL V2. ?
October 5, 2021 -

Hey everyone

TL;DR >> The title

I know this must be already asked (a lot) but the new Huntsman TKL seems to differ on its switches.

Will try to give direct and helpful facts about myself:

  • Owned a Blackwidow Chroma Stealth (purple switches) for ~7 years.

    • I love the fact that is not THAT noisy but I still can feel reaction

  • I've read about RED (v1) that it is really messy to write on them and even gaming, when you rest our fingers on the keys

  • I have never had a clicky switch (more than orange) so I don't really know if it'd bother me while gaming

  • like Razer, both KB+M lasted me for 5+ years before first ''details'' and just now (almost 7y) started failing noticeably

  • EDIT: I mainly play WoW, and generally, RPGs /MMORPGs. Occasionally, Shooters.

Important Note

  • I'm in Colombia and will have it internationally shipped, so I can't just buy and return if don't like it

PLUS Question

  • Is it worth getting the 'same' mouse again? My Razer Naga Chroma is failing, and I'm thinking on getting the Razer Naga X to replace it

Thanks everyone for your insight

I prefer the purple switches on my Huntsman V2. The added noise might take a bit of getting used to at first but I find it to be more satisfying. The V2 Huntsman boards have a sound dampening foam that reduces SOME of the noise but not all of it. The V1 reds were indeed quite sensitive. I couldn't adjust to them even after using MX Speed switches for a couple years. I will say that they are fantastically smooth though. The V2s actually fix this somewhat and the foam helps by making them a bit "heavier" to press so they don't accidentally register as easily. For MMOs, I would say the added feedback from the purples is a boon because accuracy is a big deal. You don't want to hit the wrong hotkey and use the wrong ability accidentally for example. But really, it comes down to what you're more comfortable using. I play a wide variety of games including MMOs like WoW and FFXIV, FPS like Rainbow 6 Siege and Doom Eternal, and rhythm games like Muse Dash on my purple switches.

r/MechanicalKeyboards on Reddit: a gaming nightmare- the razer huntsman mini purple switches
July 5, 2024 -

I've owned this keyboard for about 3 months, and it has been a nightmare of gaming for 3 months. I originally bought it because my brother had one with red switches in black, and was pretty good at gaming, and I also liked white on black for my setup, although the keyboard looks good, it doesn't preform good, and from my personal experience, at all. It sounds terrible, the shaky metal stabilizers, and terrible sounding clicky switches I've grown a hatred to even though I love clicky keyboards. And it's crappy build quality that I paid $106 for, having just a thin metal plate that feels more like plastic, I'm pretty sure it is plastic too! The keys are shaky as hell despite the metal stabilizers, and often times when I click space it shakes like crazy. My old keyboard- a HyperX keyboard, had a way better build quality for way cheaper. The white looks good from above, but under the keycaps its very, very ugly. The crappy-looking floating switches that look like they ran out of materials half-way through, and the highly visible screws. And the performance. I play alot of fast-paced games, and when I play Roblox I usually play a battleground game. And I have to tell you, this thing barely responds and sucks at pressing more than one key at once. I usually use my 3rd move the most because most selectable characters have a pretty good third move, and that keycap, along with the part of the switch it was connected to somehow broke off mid-gameplay. This is probably because how razer stupidly designed their switches to be, wait a minute, after close inspection, it's an OPTICAL SWITCH? PREFORMANCE THAT BAD WITH AN OPTICAL SWITCH? Idk man but if it's because these purple switches are not linear that's still not an excuse. And don't get me started with this stupid razer software. Every time I load it up it takes longer than I want it to, sometimes even interrupting me mid-game. And I've noticed if it's loading while I'm playing a game the game becomes significantly laggier and takes longer to load, something I didn't expect a software to do. And the only reason I ever open the crappy software is to make the LEDs to actually go to the color I set them to, which in the first place shouldn't even be an issue, since on really old SteelSeries keyboard automatically turned to their set color. When I posted a similar post in razer a bunch of fan-boys blamed it on user-error and dumb stuff like that even though it was clearly the keyboard. One person went as far to say it's because the switches are not linear resulting in a performance drop, and if that is so why is it advertised as the exact same thing as the mini with red switches? Does not seem like user error to me! So in a nutshell, I will not be buying razer products in the future, and wouldn't recommend anything razer to anyone anymore, besides probably the huntsman mini pro which is pretty good but for a hefty price, where you are better of getting a SteelSeries Apex 9 or Pro.

Heard the v1 was a very loud keyboard, curious if the foam made it any quieter.

I know mechanicals have to make some noise but the less the better for me, I have sound cancelling headphones anyway so removing the clicks is more for other people than me

I currently own a Blackwidow Elite orange switch and I am looking to upgrade to an optical switch keyboard. The problem is that 1. Razer doesn't offer a tactile optical switch to my knowledge and 2. I don't want to get a non-Razer keyboard. Among the existing optical switches that are offered by Razer (which only consists of linear red and clicky purple as far as I am aware), which one will give me a closer experience to the current orange switch that I have?

I want to feel the keys as I press them so I don't fat finger and to prevent typos but I also don't like how loud and "cheap" the green switch feels. Is it a "pick your poison" type of situation where I won't be 100% satisfied with either given my preference for the orange switch? Or can I pick one and be satisfied with it?

Hello, My dad wanted a keyboard for christmas gift so we ended up buying the purple switch huntsman elite.

We have the blackwidow v2 tournament edition with green switches and the computer is in the living room so we dont want much noise, thats why i'm wondering if it was a good choice to buy purple switches (If you can, can you % the difference of noise ?)

They're completely, radically different. If possible, go to a big electronics store and try out a bunch of mechanical keyboards. Cherry Reds will feel extremely similar to Razer Yellows, and Cherry Blues (and Razer Greens) will feel kinda like Purples. Basically, go yellow if you want no feedback at all, go purple if you want a ton of feedback. Gamers seem to like reds/yellows because it's a "faster" switch, in terms of the time between when you start applying pressure and when the switch activates. Typists will almost always prefer Blues/Greens/Purples because it lets your brain know you successfully hit the key and, ultimately, leads to faster typing with fewer typos because you're not missing or second-guessing keystrokes. Personally, I hate Cherry MX Reds and and Razer Yellows and would rather have a membrane board than them, but it's entirely subjective. I'm on purples now, my favorite switch currently, but I also like blues and greens (and have both). As per "faster," in theory, purple is fastest (in terms of the time between switch actuation and the computer receiving the signal) but I very much doubt a human being could ever tell the difference. I can't. Purples, in terms of feel, are like a lighter blue/green with shorter travel. In my opinion, they offer a really good balance of the feedback of a green with the speed of a yellow. If you have no idea what you want, and you can't test them in real life, then you should get browns or oranges. These are the most balanced switches and can be treated as a "one size fits all" approach. Even I like Oranges.

Hello! I'm making the switch from a Razer Huntsman Elite to a Keychron V1 Max to open up some space on my desk for projects through wireless connectivity and TKL. I really really really like the razer purple optical switches, and I'd like to hot-swap them over to the V1 Max if possible. I did a fair amount of googling, and the switches are supposedly hot-swappable, but I don't know if an optical switch will fit a regular mechanical slot (vague google results, conflicting results). First time delving into my (hopefully last) proper keyboard. Any insight would be appreciated!! If the keys aren't compatible, what's the closest type that would be? TIA!!

So my ducky one 2 mini recently broke so I've been looking for a new 60% keyboard. When I saw the razer huntsman mini I knew that i wanted it. I just cant decide if I want to get the Purple switch version now or wait for the Red switch version which I hear isn't coming out till the end of august. My ducky has brown switches so the Red switches would be quieter but I would not have a keyboard for a while. So my question is. are the Purple switches tolerable for long gaming sessions compared to browns. My mic doesn't pick up my keyboard so that wont be a problem. It is that I will hear it. I pretty much only game and use the keyboard for work during the school year. I used it A LOT since April because my school went online.

I just want other peoples opinion on gaming with loud switches.
Thanks!!

I'm planning on buying the razer huntsman TE keyboard, and I'm wondering if I should get red or purple switches. I like the sound of reds, but I'm afraid the actuation point/speed of the switch will get in the way of typing/essays. The clicky switches sound decent, but I'm afraid of them being too loud or annoying for anyone over a mic. I'm having a really difficult time deciding which one to get. Does anyone have any useful tips/experiences?

I have a Huntsman TE with reds and a regular Huntsman with purples. Here is my experience with both: My take is that Huntsman TE is still really loud when you're typing something up fast, as the board makes a LOT of clacking noises. It is very light in terms of actuation force needed, so you will be making a lot of mistakes at first, and then slowly get used to it. The Regular huntsman has the somewhat-loud clicky mechanisms within the switch, but eventually you get used to it. I found that this keyboard is THE keyboard to type up essays and reports with, as the actuation, combined with the crisp clicky noises makes it very nice for typing for long periods of time. However, it will cause interference with the mic when you are playing video games. Out of both, I would recommend the purple switches, since linears, while fast and light, are simply not comfortable when typing for long periods of time. If you have any further questions, just ask away. Hope this helps, cheers. Edit: If you want a keyboard with a switch that is in the middle of these two, I would suggest taking a look at either the Razer Blackwidow V2 TKL, or the Blackwidow Lite, as both these keyboards have the Razer Orange mechanical switches. They have the added tactile bump you find in the purples, while not making any clicky noise. They feel like the great purple switches, just without the loud clicky noise, hence making them great for long typing sessions and not causing mic interference while gaming.
