Hi! Does anyone have experience with reader/scanning pens? The research looks promising. My school has agreed to buy a set of 5 for my learning center… but I have no idea which brand to get. I can’t afford the ones that are at the top of a few dyslexia-related website’s lists of the best pens (c-pen). I bought one for 70 bucks from a brand called Svannto or something like that. It seems to work just fine. I’m just scared to buy a bunch of expensive tech stuff without knowing the quality. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Oh, I use them! I have the ScanMarker Reader Pens and a Pro Pen! We got a huge grant and bought like ten Readers to distribute to students across the school (I have a few who keep one with them for their insanely severe dyslexia, and then some teachers keep one in their rooms to be used as needed each period). These are the ones that need to be Bluetoothed or USB connected to their computer/chromebook and used with a web app to scan text. It actually works really well once the kids get the hang of it. They used it to hear audio versions of their text or to simply scan questions into the computer and convert it into the OpenDyslexic font so they could read it themselves. The main drawback was a fairly short battery life if they were paired via Bluetooth (my students estimated about 2-3 class periods of regular use, so maybe a couple hours). Using the USB eliminated that issue, but it was a little unwieldy but doable. Those pens are only like.... okay they are $200, but go on sale occasionally and they might do school/bulk discounts. Free product disclaimer, but they did also send me a Pro Pen later on to review and keep. I gave it to my student who was using his pen the most, and he vastly preferred the Pro because it has a much longer battery life, and he could directly Bluetooth his Airpods to the Pen instead of connecting to the computer. The software is directly part of the pen instead of having to transfer to a computer/app for scanning/reading. This student had severe dyslexia and phonological gaps due to hearing loss but both pens helped him be completely independent in gen ed. I think you could easily get away with the ScanMarker Airs ($150) depending on the age of your students. They do genuinely work well and if we got another grant I would consider getting more. Not to like, shill too hard, but I did a lot of research before we bought our first set and I've appreciated their customer service since then.

My daughter is likely dyslexic (we haven't yet got her formally diagnosed but I'm 99% sure as is the school). She's slowly picking up reading, but it's painfully slow. I'm considering getting her a text to speech pen in the hope it might break the barrier that reading currently is for books, and I wondered if anyone else had tried this successfully? It's an expensive purchase if it doesn't help.

Getting a good 1:1 tutor would be a better investment, especially at school-age.
