I think it partially depends on what works for your bathroom layout, but when I remodeled I opted for a hanging cabinet/shelf instead, like this and just used a regular wall-mounted mirror above the sink. But you can also get recessed mirrors that don't really look like medicine cabinets per se but still swing out with some shallow storage. IMO, the big boxy obvious medicine cabinets look pretty dated. More on reddit.com

May seem like a silly question at first, but noticed the trend that newer builds are only putting mirrors and not mirrored medicine cabinets. Assuming this is partially for cost savings and partially for aesthetics since mirrors can sit flush.
For those with just mirrors, are you using a separate hanging cabinet? I've never had a bathroom without a medicine cabinet.

I put recessed medicine cabinets in mine. As far as I'm concerned there's no such thing as too much storage when you are just replacing otherwise wasted space. 🤷

I’m in an apartment with a thin wood wall to the side of my mirror that would be the perfect space for a lightweight/easily installed medicine cabinet but it seems like most of the medicine cabinets I find require a recessed installation.
