I currently use an original EOS R, which I've always liked quite well but has always struggled a bit with sports/action stuff. I've been thinking about upgrading to an R6 MKII. Basically what I need is a "do it all" camera that works with a one-man, fast workflow setup for both photos and video. That is to say I need the camera to do the following:
-
Be small enough to do relatively unobtrusive street photography (my favorite style of photography)
-
Action/sports. I sometimes do photo and video stuff for parents at local middle/high school events. I'm looking for something that does really clean 1080p, or possibly a nice 4K24. I also need the still photography to have a good drive speed, and fast AF for sports games (football, basketball, baseball, etc).
-
Macro. Preferably with in-camera focus stacking
-
Good skin tones straight out-of-camera if needed.
Based on looking at some test footage, I feel pretty confident that the R6 MkII is a good choice, but just in case I've overlooked something I wanted to ask here.
If it matters, I own a bunch of EF and a few RF lenses already, plus a handful of batteries for the EOS R that should make transitioning to an R6 MkII reasonably straightforward. I pretty much buy Canon lenses only, so I'm not super concerned about the lack of 3rd party RF glass. My budget is $2,000 for the body. I'm planning to take some time with this and probably buy a used or certified refurbished camera. Maybe I'll see if I can pick up something on a Black Friday or Christmas sale.
Does anybody have any negative experiences with the R6 MkII that should scare me, or am I overlooking anything that might make the R6 MkII bad for my use cases?

I'm just starting to get into photography again (real photography, I take tons of photos on my phone), and I've had my sights set on the R6 for a while now, but then I heard about the MK II.
It seems to be better in every way (except low light, the higher resolution, which I plan to do a good amount of), so would buying the R6 (MK I) be a mistake?
This is really only a hobby and will be my next camera for a *long* time, so I don't wanna buy the wrong thing
Thanks

According to Canonrumors, there will be an announcement for a Canon R6 V next week. Based on the R6 III and with the R50 V-like form factor, could this be the camera that I’ll upgrade my R5 from??? 🤔
And is this possibly a competitor to the Sony A7C series? I’ve been wanting a Canon in that form factor for a long time now.
Hello everyone! I’ve been wanting an upgrade to full frame for a while and recently sold my canon r50 and fuji xt30 mk1. since springtime i’ve been thinking the canon r6i is the perfect option as it’s affordable use, looks like it has what i’m looking for, and all that jazz. But i’m sure all of you are familiar with the feeling of making a big purchase because of good reviews, then after getting it suddenly all the bad reviews appear. 😭 i know for a fact i won’t be able to afford the r6iii when it comes out, but i just want to know if the r6i is really a good option or if the r6ii blows it out of the water?
Hello,
I have an EOS R for the past 3 years or so, and I miss some features like the joystick and the dial, and wanted to swap my body for a new one.
I know there’s the R6 MkII now, but I’m looking to buy a used R6 MkI since it’s cheaper and I use mostly for personal projects, I don’t need it to be the latest version as far as it suits my needs.
Is there anything that I should know about the R6 Mark I that it’s know for, like first batch issues, common issues or problems that I should be aware of when looking for a used one?
Hi! I have an old 60D but its time is come. I’m considering to buy an R6 (NOT the mark II). I’m not a professional photographer, but I studied and practiced photography a lot (I work as animator and I often do stop motion so I used also for this). I like a lot to do photography when I travel and especially portraits. I recently see that come out the R8 that is lighter and newer (but I’m not a “I want the last gear” person).
Do you think I’ll have to go on with the R6 (that have the stabilizer) or do you think it’s better to go with the little one?
Thank you very much
Ps. My budget is max 2000€ and not more
whilst my 5d mk2 still works perfectly, it is starting to show it's weakness with AF and low light (which are two things that are crucial for me shooting concerts/clubs/low light events) and i am more and more starting to feel like i'm being limited by my camera. after spending a lot of money on new lenses this year, i think it's finally time to send my 12yo camera body into retirement and get an upgrade.
i'm looking at two probable options: used r6 + ef-rf converter - about 1900-2k euro used r6 II + ef-rf converter - ~2500 euro
my main question is - is the ~600 extra euro for the mkII worth it? i've tried out my friend's r6 for a couple of events and that already feels so good as far as autofocus and general use that I can't really see how the mkII could improve. keep in mind these 600 euro wouldn't be going towards anything else, it's not like i need any lenses right now or any other piece of gear so they'd just be staying in my bank account until i get a new gear ick. if you have any other recommendations feel free to suggest! i do feel like full frame is a requirement for me purely because of what i do. thanks to anyone willing to help me!
Ordered mine today. Still got a few more days before it ships for me to cancel it. Anything I should know before I get my hands on it?
Hi There! Im completely new to photography but have always had a passion and really want to get into it, for my first camera I was going to get either the R50 or the R10 but noticed on amazon a really good deal (I think) and I would like your guy's opinion. The R10 camera body only used would be around £750 and a new R50 at £630 but I had a look on amazon and for the R6 (Not the Mark II R6) is currently on sale from £2400 to £1349 which is 44%. Is the R6 by itself worth it to spend the extra to get a full frame "Advanced" camera or should I stick with the R50? I understand it wont be a good learning camera but I am committed and have enrolled in classes for learning photography and editing. I was mostly going to do Landscape and Nature photography with some Street and Portrait photography too and want to do this as a side hobby / career to my current plan. What do you guys think is it worth it for the extra £650?
New photographer I just bought a the R6 this is my first camera, going forward I am wondering if I should buy EF lenses and use the adaptor for cost or I should just stick with the RF lenses?
What just accessories should I also get? A flash? There is so much information out there I just don’t know what is a good starting point.
I am currently on a 90D and looking to upgrade to something better that I’ll be able to use for freelance work when I get out of college next May. The r6 checks the boxes I want as a hybrid shooter (full frame, 4K 60p, c-log) and I know there was an overheating issue but I think I can manage with it.
My question is: is it still viable for this year and the years to come? Should I hold off? Is there a better option for me out there (Canon or not)? Are there new models coming out soon?
B and H is currently running a killer deal where I can get the r6 plus a 24-105mm 4fL lens for around $2700, it seems too good of a deal not to pull the trigger on, thoughts?
Hey guys! 🙂 I'm in a kind of big dilemma here 🫣
I'm having a huuuge upgrade, going from a pretty old dslr nikon camera. After sooo much research I put the canon r6 mark ii first on my list followed by the sony a7 iv. I seem to match more with the Canon for some reason... I must say that the upgrading in controls and crazy amount of options at the sony scares me a lot (I've used my friend's sony already a couple of times) taking in account I've been using a very simple camera all these years...
The thing is that for the canon, I'll only be able to afford the cheaper RF lenses or sigma with adapter to start. I have only ever used native lenses on my dslr and although I know sigma ones are amazing, I've found mixed comments regarding their performance adapted to RFs. So really wondering if I'm making things too difficult and should maybe just go for the sony? (I use the camera for work very often: photography for restaurants, hotels and private shootings)
Has anyone experienced this before? Is it worth to buy the r6 ii? Thank you so much in advance, I'm glad to have found a community where i could maybe get some support 🙌🏼❤️
Hi folks,
I think about buying the EOS R6. Since its so much money, I would like to know if you think its a good camera for making small brand films and interviews. The reasons I tend to the R6:
-
I would like to use a Gimbal and the videoautofocus would be really helpful here. I guess it would save me a lot of missed shots since using manual focus on a Gimbal is difficult
-
I need a new photo camera as well, so If I dont buy the R6, I would need to buy a used EOS R for 1200€. At the moment I got 3 very good canon full frame EF lenses, so Iam basically trapped in the Canon Eco system and breaking out and reselling would make me loose some money.
-
The biggest trouble of the R6 is overheating and other problem is that the h265 arent that great to edit. I would solve this by buyin the Ninja V, since the bigger screen also helps by judging focus. I dont like the idea of spending so much money on the Ninja V, but the better codec would help to edit so much faster, that I guess its worth it for this alone. I have seen videos where you get around 2 hours 4k recording with the Ninja V and that would be more than enough for me for interviews. In most situation I would shoot some minutes and then do breaks again, if I overheat I can plug in the Ninja V.
I see two alternatives at the moment:
-
Buying a Blackmagic Pocket 4k or 6k. Braw edits easily and the camera is cheaper than the R6. Downside is I would additional need a photo camera , a villtrox speedbooster and to match a 24-70 2.8. fullframe I would need to buy the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 for around 600€. This all adds up to basically the same price like the R6 but I still dont have a photo camera.
-
Changing to the Sony A7IV if it has really 10 Bit. I guess the price would be around the same as the R6 but it has more Megapixel, what would be nice. My guess would also be that the video options would be at least similiar and the Overheating less of a problem, but the camera isnt out yet. However maybe its wort to wait? If it has no overheating problems, more Megapixel and better codecs, I might really would swap systems
so thats it! Basically I find the R6 very attractive because Iam basically a Canon hybrid shooter and its the best hybrid cam I know. But its so much money that I need a second opinion.
I wanted to upgrade my EOS R for a longer time since I felt it lacked AF capabilities compared to my R7.
First I saw an R8 for only €1000 and wanted to buy that. However I quickly decided against it since I'm a semi professional shooter and I felt that the R8 wasn't up to my needs.
I'd liked to have dual card slots, a bigger battery and a more robust body. Thought about pulling the trigger on a used R6 but decided to go 'all the way' and go for the mark ii. I could write it on business expenses and buy tax free here. With the deal I got I'd only pay €1500-ish for the new body with 5 years of warranty.
Personally I shoot events, parties, a few weddings and a lot of other stuff like racing, animals etc and I think I could definitely benefit from this camera. It'll arrive tomorrow and can't wait to try it out😍
Maybe I'll sell the R, or actually keep that for backup, although I do like the R7 a lot.
Do you think it's a good deal on this camera? I'd love to hear what your experience has been with the R6 mark ii 📸
After the better part of a decade using the same Canon DSLR, I've finally made the decision to upgrade. It's not easy for me to invest in myself the way this requires, especially when I'm not in a position where I have significant amounts of money to toss around willy-nilly. I always find new excuses and "better" or "more important" things to spend the money on when I'm at the crossroad where one path would lead me toward investing in my photography. That's why all of the glass I have is the same glass I've had for the last six years. The newest camera purchase I made was the GoPro Hero 11 Black that I bought in 2022...and it serves me well, especially now that I'm spending more time shooting video. That changes next week. I will be purchasing a Canon EOS R6 Mark III along with an RF 24-105mm lens, and the lens mount that will allow me to still utilize at least my 50mm and 75-300mm EF lenses without any quality loss. After that, I'll be planning to pick up a gimbal that's compatible with both the new Canon and the GoPro. Does anyone have any tips or recommendations when working with the new R6 model?
I’m a car photographer I shoot with a canon t7 currently great for starters I’ve been using it and making decent money for about a year I’m trying to up my quality and get better shots I was looking at the R5 but that is quite expensive R6 is down in price but I don’t know many other car photographers that shoot with an R6 any help?
Lens selection always has a bigger impact on image quality than the body.
If the 20mp of the R6 is sufficient for your work. The r6 will suit you well.
Certainly plan on ditching any EF-s glass you have, it would force the camera to 8mp APSc mode.
Upgraded from the 7D2 to the R6. Automotive and Motorsports focused photographer. The R6 has been a massive upgrade for me, and I would 100% recommend this body if you have your mind set on upgrading to a newer mirrorless body. My EF24-70 F4 feels like a new lens on the R6 body. RF glass is just such a pleasure to use too. Not to mention the R6 seriously feels like a jack of all trades (even more so if you get the R6ii for video), it works well for whatever else you want to shoot.
R6 mk iii is due to come out in a few hours, what’s everybody’s thoughts? Many people I know are slightly annoyed as they find they are going to pay heavily on the video features. How are people watching the release? Anyone to keep an eye on?
I think I've read all the related post in this subreddit. Just want some informed opinions in today's market and context.
I came from a nine years old 600D (t3i) lol, have a couple of full frame EF lenses and I'm a hybrid shooter, maybe leaning a little bit more to video/cinematography, been shooting with rented equipment in the last few years.
I've seen that photo/video quality, rolling shutter, and dynamic range its almost the same between the two. Budget isnt a problem in this case.
R6 case:
Really want to try that FF goodies and a little better noise performance. It seems that ergonomics are better than the R7, and Canon said they weren't going to make a battery grip for it, a big bummer for me. My main corncern it's how the overheating problem its gonna be an issue in the long term, beacuse I dont do a lot of long form video shooting, but that's a performance issue that maybe will get worse over the years.
R7 case:
No video record limit and better heat handling in the long term its basically what's made me consider the R7 as an upgrade. Also, that it's a little cheaper and that money could go to accesories or glass. For the FF issue I was looking for a Viltrox 1.7x speedbooster, knowing that this sort of thing it's another failure point and another glass element in front of the sensor (and almost 200+ euros in cost). Lower noise performance it's something that also made me look for the R6. And finally, Canon doesn't seem too enthusiastic about expanding the RF-S lenses ecosystem xd. And the battery grip issue.

-
A full frame sensor it's something that I really want to try, but shooting in an APS-C it's something I'm used to.
-
In both cases I will be buying the EF to RF adapter.
-
I know that the R6 mark II solves almost all the problems but right now it's 1000€ more expensive and that's out of the park for me.
-
Sony it's just not an option for me xd.
Thanks in advance for any clarity you can give me💃🏼
