What I learned (the level-headed part)
I purchased a queen-sized Casper Dream, and deeply regret my purchase. The poor out-of-the-box smell of their mattress is well documented on this sub [1] [2] [3] [4], but I wanted to add a point I unfortunately didn't consider or give credence to before buying. I wish I noticed that many mixed reviews (such as post [4] above) were able to escape their apartment for a week or two when the mattress smells the worst, and usually still note that the mattress smelled bad afterwards. If you (like me) work from home and/or live in a small apartment, you do not get to escape the mattress at its worst and will be exposed to this mattress for extended periods of time (which other reviewers may not have experienced) which, in my experience, led to the adverse effects of the smell compounding.
Be prepared to order this mattress, spend 3 days to a week to discover both you cannot put up with the mattress smell and that there's no sign of it going away. Then, when you request a return, expect to have to hold onto the mattress for up to 30 days waiting for the Casper reps to remove it from your residence, meaning you will still be without a bed but still have to put up with the smell. Chose for yourself if this is worth your time and money to roll the dice on if you get to pay over a thousand dollars to make your apartment or bedroom unusable for up to 30 days.
My full story (the emotionally-charged part)
First of all, be extremely skeptical of any review that claims to have slept well on the first night, as Casper recommends you air the mattress out for multiple days. I put far too much belief into external reviews or accounts of the smell going away after a couple of days, or thought the smell just wouldn't be that bad and that I would be able to ignore it. It is worth noting that I submitted a review for the mattress on their website. When you submit, it says your review may appear on their website, not that it will appear. At the time of posting, my review has not appeared, so be skeptical that their 4.6 rating is them cherry picking reviews that are favorable to them!
My apartment is genuinely unusable so long as this mattress is in my bed room, as I get a debilitating headache no matter where I am in the apartment. I can taste the smell everywhere I go, and it takes about an hour of being outside for me to get my wits back. Note: it is not a standard rotten smell that you can just ignore, it smells like you are continuously inhaling chemicals. I evidently don't get poor air circulation trapping the gasses in my bedroom that just need to be aired out as the smell circulates to my entire apartment, the mattress is just continuously off gassing. I cannot review the comfort of sleeping on the mattress as I cannot go near it for any longer than 10 minutes. Even when I spend over an hour in my apartment and adjust to the smell itself, my headache, lightheartedness, and nausea persist.
Call a Casper representative and they tell you the smell can last up to two weeks, and that they'd be happy to offer an exchange, but it's evident from other reviews that the smell can go on for far longer. Also, why would I want to exchange, only to have to wait another two weeks to see if the replacement has the same issue? General unawareness from their representatives on how this can actually ruin your life for the better part of a month. Assess for yourself if it's worth waiting two weeks with a horrid smelling mattress to see whether or not the smell dissipates. Do not get this mattress unless you don't need it immediately *and* have a garage or something to air it out in. Not fit for shipping to a smaller space or apartment, or for people who work from home and can't avoid the mattress while it "airs out".
My wife and I are in need of a new mattress, I've heard good things about Casper mattresses, and others similar to them. What I'd like to know is how they hold up for larger people? I'm 6'3 and on the wrong side of 260lbs. Our current coil spring mattress is only 3 years old and my side has started to sag really badly. Any insight would be appreciated!
Researching a new mattress and realized I wanted to share my experience with our current Casper Hybrid. Bf (6ft, 175lbs - combo sleeper, mostly back/side) & I (5'8, 130lbs - combo sleeper mostly side/stomach) started sleeping on a new Casper Hybrid mattress (innerspring and memory foam combo) in summer 2021 using a new IKEA Malm platform bed (meets support requirements).
At first I was like "ooh, cozy" the memory foam provided a deceiving/alluring squish. With time, I have noticed that the squish is to its detriment. The memory foam sleeps HOT, we both wake up with limbs that have fallen asleep during the night, and as a side sleeper my hips suffer most of all.
The memory foam starts out the night *seeming* supportive enough but with the warmth it holds through the night hours, it actually collapses and my hips drive down into the spring portion as well as the curvature of my spine totally bottoming out so there is no real support in the waist region. I wake up in pain/feeling stiff most nights sleeping on this mattress and I don't even use it full time!! (For the record, I spend other nights on a 10yo Saatva that is a little firm at times but MASSIVELY more supportive and doesn't create pain/sag OR on an old (15yo+?) unknown brand innerspring that has started to sag with gel foam topper from Walmart which is a great supplemental layer in the meantime).
The Casper Hybrid Queen was about $1700 at purchase and I absolutely would not purchase it again, especially at that price. I have aches from hypermobility and need adequate support. Most nights I also place a pillow between my knees for spinal alignment and if I'm not with my partner I prop up a pillow behind my back as well. If I had to sleep on the Casper Hybrid more than 7 nights a month I would probably demand that we either replace or get a latex topper/etc.
For me personally sleeping on memory foam at all is a nuisance - again limbs fall asleep and perceived support drops off/collapses during the night. I guess here's a good time to mention that I also spent the night on a TempurPedic so the harrowing sensation of being swallowed by the bed/swimming in mayonnaise and not being able to get out is one I would definitely avoid too.
If you're like me, maybe you've also started to research beds with latex components (cooler sleeping, more consistently supportive than memory foam). It's hard to find a company with good consistent products but I'll continue the hunt. I hope this info is helpful for anyone considering this mattress and identifying if it will meet their needs/be compatible with their body type.
As a 65 Kg (144 lbs) stomach sleeper who occasionally switches to side and back sleeping, I decided to try the Casper Original mattress. Here's a detailed account of my experience:
Ordering & delivery: I placed my order on Casper.com (Mar 18) and was pleasantly surprised by the quick delivery, receiving the mattress just a few days later (Mar 21).Unboxing & setup: The box was quite heavy, making it difficult to handle alone, but I managed to unpack and set up the mattress without assistance.
First impressions: Upon inspection, the mattress showed an unusual firmness in the middle third and softness at the head and feet thirds. Although that difference in firmness felt odd to the touch (like there is a concrete block somewhere under the middle third), it proved to be comfortable to lie on.
First night: My first night on the Casper Original was a welcome change from my old, worn-out IKEA spring mattress, resulting in a restful and enjoyable sleep.
First week: Throughout the first week, I would say my sleep quality was consistently good, and I was quite satisfied with my purchase.
Second week & emerging issues: However, in the second week, I started to notice the mattress slept hot, and it softened significantly overnight as my body heat transferred to the mattress (most likely the memory foam softening as it was heating because I noticed it was nice and firm in the evening when the bed was still cool). The most affected area was the middle third, which lost support as the night progressed.
Worsening issues: As weeks went by, the mattress continued to soften at night and I began experiencing lower back pain. This was likely due to inadequate support in the hips area for my stomach-sleeping position.
Decision to return mattress: Early this month, after another poor night's sleep and lower back pain, I concluded that the Casper Original mattress wasn't suitable for my needs, and I decided to look for another option. I did my homework prior to purchasing the Casper mattress so I had a second option, although a pricier one (I chose a Novosbed firm mattress, which so far has provided the firm support and pressure relief I was seeking).
Returning the Casper mattress: I called Casper support today to schedule the return. The customer service team was helpful and made the process hassle-free, barely asking why I wanted to return the mattress (I hope they'll later ask for my feedback). The return is set for tomorrow via Got-Junk, and my refund will be processed once Casper receives proof of pickup.
In conclusion, while the Casper Original mattress initially offered comfort and quality sleep, it ultimately failed to deliver consistent support overnight, especially for a stomach sleeper like me. If you're considering this mattress, be aware of potential heat and support issues especially if you're a stomach sleeper, and make sure to take advantage of the return policy if it doesn't meet your expectations.

…is it too late to return it? I purchased in October 2023 and have tried to force myself to like it. Here we are nearly 8 months later and it’s been miserable. The Casper mattress is a raging inferno that I can bear no longer.
Would they accept a return this late in the game or am I SOL here? Thanks in advance.
Recently returned a Casper Hybrid bed and am so happy with my choice to do so! I found the Casper to be far too soft and led me to bad back pain. I also found it never quite took shape after taking it out of the box (had it for 1 month).
I cannot recommend this mattress, as even the “hybrid” model is comparable to the foam beds that WalMart sells for 1/4 the price. If you’re looking at Casper, I’d HIGHLY recommend picking up a cheap foam mattress instead (note: this isn’t what I did, I ended up switching back to a coil mattress.).
TLDR: hated Casper, and probably could have got the same bed for much cheaper elsewhere
Has anyone purchased a Casper mattress? I’m think about buying the 12” Cooling model on sale but don’t know about the quality or cooling power of them. Thoughts?
I've had a Casper mattress for two years. I don't really understand why anyone would actively be in this sub unless they 1) have an ulterior motive or 2) are looking to find information on buying a mattress (refer back to #1). But maybe people want to just share good or bad experiences, which is why I'm here.
I'm writing this because I just had a very positive experience with Casper customer support. Good customer support seems rare these days so I wanted to acknowledge my appreciation for the good experience.
I have a Casper mattress, foundation, sheets, pillows and duvet. Honestly, beds are so personal, you really should try it out yourself. I like it though. I'd buy it again. When I first got the mattress I think I got a defect and they replaced it. It was pretty easy but they asked for pictures (which I think is totally reasonable).
The sheets have been great and are well made. I'd buy those again too. The pillows are not as comfy as they used to be, but Casper even says so themselves on the instructions when you receive them that pillows should be replaced every few years. So, I'm 50/50 on if I'd get those again. They were nice, it's more a question of price vs life space. Duvet cover has been nice - we actually just bought a second one in a new color during their 50% off sale.
The foundation has always been kind of funky. The wooden slats have always fallen through the frame after a while, which causes weird support for the bed. I just contacted their customer support and it was extremely hassle-free to get that replaced. I had to send pictures, coordinate the junk truck to pick up the old one and be home to receive the new one in the mail. These are all very reasonable things and I personally think should be expected when you're doing a warranty replacement. I only say that because I've seen people complain about having to receive it in the mail, etc...I mean come on, they can't just teleport it to your house. The new foundation is considerably more stable and works great now. So that problem was totally solved by them.
Anyway, overall, I've been happy with the products. I think "mattress" is one of the most competitive ad search words these days so I imagine a lot of the "brand name" products are decent quality, with the little things like them respecting their return and warranty policies and customer service separating the good companies from the bad. I haven't tried other brands so can't speak to their quality or customer service but Casper has made me a happy customer, even two years after my purchase. Thanks Casper for standing behind your products.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us, something I wish more people would do. Glad to see it was a positive one for you and that you're pleased with their products and customer service.
The Casper wasn't for me but I agree with you on their costumer service, it's outstanding.
I got the Casper Original after trying it out 3 different occasions, and on 3 different stores (2 times at The Bay, 1 time at a Casper store - in Vancouver, Canada). First of all, the availability of retail spaces to test was a big plus, as very few beds in a box have places to test in Canada (only Leesa, Casper, Endy and Polysleep have retail availability). The experience at the Casper location was particularly good - no up selling, no rushing, just answering questions and letting you try out the mattress in a very pleasant setting. On the other hand, one of the salesmen at The Bay discouraged me and advised me to try a 'real mattress', and didn't even tell me that I could by directly from them (he told me to just buy it online).
I did try out a few 'real mattresses' but nothing jumped out at me as amazing, and I couldn't really do comparison shopping and read reviews because of the dumb system of product segmentation. I also went to Sleep Country, and the experience was as crappy and sleazy as everyone says. Not knowledge whatsoever of their products, insane prices, and ridiculous offers (the offered me for example a 'deal' on a returned Tempur with a stain on it for $2500 cad - yeah, no).
As to better 'bed in a box' options, selection that doesn't cost a ton to ship is very limited in Canada, so we decided to go with the brand that we could actually test physically and that we liked the best.
The only mattress that I liked better than the Casper in store was the Tempur Pedic, but it was more than twice the price, and I figure out that for the cost difference I would at least give the Casper a try, since it has the amazing return policy. We settled on the 'original' mattress because the hybrid felt really soft to us, and the wave just seemed even more overpriced than the Tempur Pedic's. We were looking for something with a medium level of firmness.
The purchase process was super smooth and pleasant. Since we have a physical store in Vancouver, we bought over the phone and picked the mattress, which fit perfectly in the trunk of my SUV. The price (including taxes), was around $1300 cad. The Bay had a slightly better price at the time, but I read nightmares about their return process, so decided to pay a bit more for the peace of mind (and glad I did).
The packaging, manual and unpacking experience is excellent. The mattress does have great design and feels like a well built product. No off gassing smell and the bed was ready to use in minutes.
Now, this is where the mixed part of the review starts. From the beginning, when I laid at home, I didn't like it as much as I had in store. It felt really firm, and you just didn't get that relaxing feeling when laying down that you get with really comfortable beds. First few nights were really rough, as I kept waking up with hip and lower back pain. To be fair, I already had some pain before the Casper as we removed a foam topper on our old mattress and after that realized how old and sunk in our mattress was (it was coming into 11 years), so it wasn't helping, so I decided to ride it out and see if the Casper broke in, or my body adapted to it.
After a couple of weeks the mattress did soften up quite a bit, and felt more comfortable, but I was still waking up with back and hip pain. It was a strange feeling, but I'm primarily a stomach sleeper and would feel like my hip area was supported, but my stomach would sink in so much that my hip stayed behind and became misaligned in some way. Things improved if I shifted my whole body downwards, so that both my feet were fully sticking out of bed. I felt the level of support was better, which leads me to think that the foam 'zones' on the Casper weren't laid out very well for my height, weight, or body shape. I sleep with my wife, who didn't necessarily think the Casper was 'amazing', but had no issues with it in terms of pain, so she probably would have kept it, so there are many people out there that could enjoy the Casper for sure.
After 30 days of pain and mediocre sleep, I finally decided I had enough. I contacted Casper and the initiated the return, no questions asked. The return support experience was excellent too. No excuses, no questions, and they accommodated all my requests, and even changed the scheduling of the pickup multiple times (I changed it as I received my replacement bed earlier than originally thought). The only thing that suck is that they weren't able to find a charity that would take it, so the sent a Got Junk truck to get it. I do feel guilty about the waste, but it was either suffering years of back pain, or taking advantage of the policy that I paid to get. After the return was completed, I sent a photo of the pickup receipt and they processed my refund immediately, even though it was a Sunday.
My last note, where I might not have given the Casper a 'fair shake', is that I have 'curved flexi slats' on my bed, which I didn't realize might be an issue until I had ordered a new bed and was reviewing their warranty policies, which require a flat slatted system. In my defense, nothing in Casper's manual stated not to use curved flexi slats, but I feel like they might interact improperly with Casper's support zone system. I've since ordered a new slat set for my new mattress, but wasn't able to test it with the Casper.
As to the replacement, I ordered a Logan & Cove hybrid, as I felt like a coil support system might help my back better. I read a ton of reviews and decided to order the Medium Plush, as many people complain that the luxury firm is too firm. I've only slept a night on it, so will wait 30 days to give a full review, but the difference was night and day. I immediately felt that relief hotel bed feeling upon laying on it, and for the first time in a while woke up without hip or back pain and feeling refreshed, even though I didn't sleep to long (because of a late sleep time, not because of the bed). My wife also feels that it is more comfortable. Now I'm glad I returned the mattress, and I feel like the Logan & Cove will be a keeper.
TLDR: Casper Original is a good quality mattress, maybe a bit overpriced, but offering an excellent customer experience, and a decent option, at least in Canada. However, my body hated it, so it had to go. The feeling of it also tries to adjust to many sleep types and tastes, but in doing so really might end up pleasing none. However, I would still consider it a good option to try, specially on sale, and I think many people might like it.
Logan & Cover review to come in 30 days!
Let me start by thanking everyone here for so much amazing mattress advice. I read pretty much every post and got some great advice from many, but especially u/the_leviathan711
Background/details: king size bed for 2 side/back sleepers with herniated disks and tons of joint pain. 5'10" 165lbs and 5'3" 156lbs. Do not like the feel of latex, have, in the past, been really happy with an IKEA hybrid that, sadly, broke down too quickly. Tested out lots of mattresses at a local store to figure out what feel we preferred. Loved the Tempur Adapt hybrid but have had a bad experience with the off-gassing, so didn't want one. More concerned about return policy than anything else. Considered DIY and got great suggestions for a build. Worried about the returning/exchanging of individual components, so didn't go that route. Locally, Costco has the best returns, so we looked at what they had available and chose the mattress that most closely resembled a combo of the DIY specs and the Tempur Adapt. The winner was the Casper Hybrid and it has been FABULOUS!
No pain when sleeping on side, wake up without joint stiffness, sleep well. Frankly, it feels like a miracle to not be in pain in the morning and to not toss and turn all night. The edge support is good, very little motion transfer and does not sleep hot (all things I was concerned about). Also, ZERO off-gassing.
Hope this helps someone!
I like how this entire subreddit can never seem to make up it's mind regarding mattresses.

I swear on me mum's life that buying this was the best thing that's ever happened to me, I woke up after sleeping on it and it cured my cancer.

I swear on me nan's life that buying this was the worst mistake I have ever made, it literally caused me to lose my job and my marriage to fail.
For crying out loud, this subreddit is next to useless.

Is this the one you got?
Hybrid vs cooling select? Anyone have experience/opinions?
I spent about $2k on my Casper mattress 3 years ago. At first it was the most comfortable thing I had ever slept on, but over time, my lower back began to hurt more and more. In the past 6 months or so, it's been pretty unbearable. I thought maybe it was my body, or that I had hurt my back doing something, but I've been traveling a lot recently and noticed that I have no back pain when I sleep in other beds. Even the air mattress I used for camping is much better for me.
Has anyone else experienced this change over time? Is it just that it has softened and become less firm? This is the first foam mattress I've owned, is this just normal for these types of mattresses?
Has anyone grabbed this mattress off the current sale? I have a old Casper I really like but am looking to upgrade to a Queen and $120 off is great
I like my current Casper because it’s firm and not bouncy, so motion transfer is minimal
Also curious if people have experience hauling it home from warehouse. Does it fit in your car? Thanks!
My wife and I have been looking for a king mattress and we’re considering pulling the trigger on a 2k mattress from a local mattress store because we were worried about the quality of a boxed mattress purchased online However, today we saw a king Casper 12” select mattress marked down selling for 300 dollars and we made the purchase because it seemed like a ridiculously good sale Was I really lucky here or is this normal?? It looks like it retails at 650 normally

When my husband and I closed on our house at the end of 2019 we decided we would get a new mattress and the old one would go in the guest room. I was pregnant and in my first trimester at the time (nausea, fatigue, irritable) and couldn’t be bothered to research a mattress so my husband did. He found the Casper and said it had great reviews and it was on sale when we got it. We didn’t move in until 2 months after we had the mattress so we only had 30 days to test it. Well Covid hit and our bed frame delivery was delayed so we slept on it on the floor of our new bedroom. At this point I’m about 28 weeks pregnant and thinking the reason I’m uncomfortable is because of the baby or because it’s on the floor and not on a frame.
I WAS WRONG.
This mattress has caused me back pain in ways you cannot imagine. I’m currently sleeping on our old IKEA mattress in the guest room because of how uncomfortable it is. And when I lay on that IKEA mattress that is practically hanging off the frame because of how lopsided it’s become- I feel like I’ve landed on a cloud from sleep heaven. (Also, at least ikea has a lifetime warranty on their mattress). You would also think a new mom would be so exhausted that she could sink into any mattress and just fall asleep but NOPE. I toss and turn for an hour before finally giving up and moving into the other room.
I regret ever agreeing to the purchase of this mattress. It is an overpriced piece of foam and it has solidified my opinion on boxed mattresses. I refuse to believe that any box mattress is comfortable. If a tired first time mom who’s baby wakes up 3-4 times a night -and has for the last 9 months- can’t find comfort in it then I KNOW it’s not a good mattress.
Sorry for the rant. If you’re thinking of a mattress, skip Casper and go with ANYTHING else.
I’m a fan of the disruptive business model of most of these companies, as well as their marketing, and the design of their products resonate with me— especially those saying they provide cradling, soft comfort for areas that are usually pressure points for side sleepers (shoulders &hips), while providing firmer support for the other areas of your body.
But, with all of these companies being startups, I’m worried about the longevity and durability of their products. When I’ve searched Consumer Reports for some of these beds, it’s only confirmed my fears. I’ve seen the most recent 4 or 5 review for Casper sleepers to be very critical about the durability 2+ years after buying the bed. Some complain about major indentation causing them to roll into the middle of the bed, the bed being hard to move around in, and the bed mainly losing support in the middle area. I know Casper has released a second generation that may have some improvements aimed for better durability, but still, I can’t ignore these reviews.
Just wondering, for those who’ve tried one of these online mattresses, how are they holding up? I’m a side/stomach sleeper ~180lbs, and my girlfriend is a back/side sleeper ~130lbs, both of average height.
These companies pay for positive reviews, so be wary of anything that sounds too good.
Tuft and needle mattress has held up for four years. I took off the fabric cover to wash it a few times and then the zipper broke. I called about getting a new cover ( you are not ever supposed to take them off). Tuft and Needle sent me a whole new mattress, because it was covered by warranty. (I think it may be a ten year warranty)
