Option 1 - you can buy Workspace which will use your own domain -- different pricing depending on country and how much storage you want. Option 2 - You can use Free gmail with your domain and use a MX forwarder to route your domain email to your Gmail (big fan of ImprovMX for this) and setup an alias to "Send from" as u/Trikotret100 already noted. The functionalities of Option 2 aren't any different than regular consumer Gmail, because, well, it's regular consumer Gmail. Note that when you share a Google Drive file, it will look like it's being shared by [email protected] and not your custom domain, because your custom domain is only available for the very small use case of Alias sending in, specifically, Gmail if you want to have a unified usage of your domain across various Google apps, then you must go with Option 1 Answer from arianebx on reddit.com

I’ve been using iCloud with my own domain, for about a year. This has a cost of apprix 1 USD Per month. Cheap, but I’m not happy about it. iCloud delete items in my trash folder after 30 days, Numbers is clumsy when you’re used to Excel, you can’t do a simple cloud sync with a NAS etc.

I’ve started thinking about Google, and I wonder if Gmail can be used with your own domain? I only have the domain, no mail server.

What option does Google Gmail bring, and have others done the same thoughts / move as me ?

r/Domains on Reddit: Is It Smart to Switch All Your Accounts to a Custom Domain Email? Risks, Rewards & Real-Life Use?
August 15, 2025 -

Hi all, I’m curious what you think about using a custom email address (like [email protected]) as my main email for everything instead of my old Gmail.

I’m considering switching all my services—work, social media, subscriptions, banking, etc.—over to my custom domain because it looks professional and feels more “mine.” But I’m nervous there might be some downsides:

Is it risky if something happens with my domain or registrar access? For example, if they go out of business, I forget to renew, or some technical issue prevents me from logging in, could I get locked out of everything if I only use my domain email?

Any problems signing up for services? Has anyone had issues with site signups not accepting custom domains, or emails getting denied/spammed more easily compared to Gmail or Outlook?

Security and reliability Is there any advantage to keeping a Gmail address as a backup for password recovery or critical accounts? Is it dumb to move everything over, or do you just use custom email for “professional” stuff and keep Gmail for “personal”?

Was it worth it for those who’ve already made the switch? Did you regret moving everything, or do you love the extra control and brand identity?

Would love to hear your stories, suggestions, and warnings before I go all-in. Should I migrate fully, go half-and-half, or just keep Gmail for backup? Am I overthinking the risks? Any real-world advice would help!

Thanks!

r/gsuitelegacymigration on Reddit: Simplest way to get gmail with custom domain
June 28, 2023 -

Today I purchased Workspace to get an gmail with a custom domain. It works just fine, but workspace is pretty expensive, especially since I’m paying for a bunch of google services that I won’t use.

Previously, I tried email forwarding with cloudfare and it worked great. However, I had one case where Gmail gave a spooky yellow warning to the recipient of an email I’d sent. I can’t afford to have my email seem suspicious or spam since I intend to use this email for work. I’m also sad I can’t set a profile picture when forwarding emails.

Is there a clear and concise way to configure email forwarding such that it complies with every header and all email clients are happy? In the mean time, I’m too paranoid to use it for fear that my emails will be flagged or removed.

Probably not what you want to hear, but I‘d either pay for Workspace or not use Gmail (as in: Google‘s mail services). I can even give you an objective reason: forwarded emails will always be at risk to be labeled as spam either on your side or on the receiver‘s side. Those emails are also often marked as either insecure or marked as not coming from the original domain, depending on how you sent mails out (via a different smtp server or Gmails send as). On top of that, the forwarding services itself will apply spam filtering to make sure that their servers aren’t abused, so you add another point of failure. And if you use a different smtp server to send the mail, you would have to go find one that is not normally used for newsletters and marketing messages because you don’t want to send out your important personal emails via, for example, SendGrid. This means you would have to pay for a reputable email provider (so you get good scores) just to use their SMTP server. That‘s a lot of hoops to jump through just to get Gmail‘s UI.

Email on your custom domain is actually in two parts. A) receiving mail at your custom domain. Almost any mail forwarding service will do this for you, and can forward mail received at your custom domain to a Gmail account. B) sending mail from your custom domain. You'll need a correctly configured smtp server to do so, with SPF, DKIM. You then configure gmail to send outgoing email via that smtp server. How much it will cost, depends on how much emails you send. Some providers have a free tier, up to a few hundred, or thousand, free outgoing emails per month, then a few cents (or dollars) for more.

First, look at how your Domain Name Service (DNS) records are setup. Do you own your domain? ie could you take your domain name away from WIX and setup on another provider? The only reason for asking this is to identify just how much you can work with customising your domain. You can go to any email provider, and they will ask you to edit the Mail eXchange (MX) record in your Domain Name Service (DNS) control panel of the company that is holding (or Hosting) your Domain Name Record. You will have to prove that you own the domain, by adding a TeXT (TXT) record in to your DNS Zone here is the knowledge base article on how to edit WIX DNS records. https://support.wix.com/en/article/editing-dns-records-in-your-wix-account Non profits can get free email through Microsoft Office 365. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/nonprofit/office-365-nonprofit-plans-and-pricing?activetab=tab:primaryr1 From never having done it before, it would take you approx 45 minutes to read up on how to do it, and 30 minutes to do it, the second time will take about 10 minutes. there will be a period of waiting, as each record has a Time To Live (TTL) during which time, servers don't ask again for the information (normally held in minutes, some have a TTL of 5 minutes, some of 1 hour, some 1 day. some DNS hosts update on the hour so if you edit something at 3.05, you would have to wait until 4.00 to "see" the change on the internet. a website mxtoolbox.com can show you how some are setup. for example, the following link shows how the redcross.org email setup is configured using office365. https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=mx%3aredcross.org&run=toolpage Here is the step by step for you. https://hostadvice.com/how-to/how-to-set-up-email-hosting-with-microsoft-office-365/ another step by step from microsoft themselves for editing WIX records is https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/admin/dns/create-dns-records-at-wix?view=o365-worldwide GMail has similar offerings, although of the 700 different organisations the company I work for looks after, none are using the g-suite stuff. https://www.google.com/nonprofits/offerings/apps-for-nonprofits/ and this link shows how to setup in gmail. https://help.ecatholic.com/article/154-set-up-g-suite-nonprofit I hope that this helps. Also I have Capitalised the main search terms you might need to look into what I have suggested. Edit #9 kept adding stuff i found Edit#10 Wow. Thanks for the gold!

A note about Wix (I just started using them for something about a month ago): The company seems to be okay, but their ecosystem has attracted a lot of scammers. Beware people offering to help you, but later turning out to be paid consultants. Beware of phishing attempts (I received one on reddit, in r/wix ). Don't give your Wix credentials to anyone. Don't click on any "link to Wix Support" or whatever on reddit or in emails or private messages.

June 20, 2024 -

Hi,

I am lost on how to do this. I have a Squarespace domain. Let's say its johndoe.com

I want to have an email that is [email protected] but I want to be able to receive and send emails using that domain in my current personal Google account. Is that possible?

I know Square offers email forwarding but seems like you cant send/reply to emails with the custom domain.

Then I went down the confusing route of Google Workspace vs Google One account and which one I should use. I already have a Google One account so do I also need Workspace?

Basically. What I want is custom email with send/receive abilities that I can check with my Google account. Is that possible? Or what options are there?

Hey all,

I’m planning to get a custom domain (10 years via Cloudflare) and use it for personal email only, something like: [email protected] for main/personal use [email protected] for logins/newsletters Maybe a wildcard or spam@ for other stuff

Still deciding between self-hosting (Mailcow, Mail-in-a-Box) vs. using services like Migadu, Proton, or iCloud+.

Curious to know: Do you use a custom domain just for personal email? Are you self-hosting or using a provider? Any issues with deliverability, spam, or maintenance? Do you think it’s worth the efforts?

Would love to hear your setups and thoughts before I jump in.

r/selfhosted on Reddit: Recommendations for personal email with custom domain
March 3, 2023 -

Hello everyone!

For personal email, I've been using Gmail for > 10 years, and I've been quite satisfied with it so far. However, I feel a bit creeped out that all of my digital identity relies on this single email address, which uses a corporate-owned domain... (yes, yes, call me paranoid all you want)

I was thinking of buying a custom domain on Namecheap (seems like a decent alternative to Google Domains and GoDaddy), and then setting up an email address with this custom domain.

Ideally, I would just have Gmail with a custom domain, as I don't have a strong incentive to move away right now, but I want the flexibility of switching to a different email provider at any time without having to change my contact info / credentials on 285737 websites and online services.

I tried to do some research, and I found the following options:

  1. I subscribe to Google Workspace for the custom domain (~70$) and follow this guide, but IIUC this will be a separate account from my personal Gmail (I couldn't find a way to upgrade my personal Gmail to a Workspace one?).

  2. I subscribe to a Namecheap private email inbox (~12$ / year) and follow one of the dozens of guides to add this email to my personal Gmail. IIUC, this means Gmail will retrieve emails from my Namecheap inbox, and send emails to Namecheap, which will then forward them from the custom domain email. While this seems like the cheapest and best option for me, I've seen many complaints that Namecheap emails end up in spam or are blacklisted ([1], [2], [3]), and that'd be really bad if I were replying to my bank or health insurance provider...

  3. I subscribe to something like ProtonMail Plus (~50$ / year), follow this guide, and then add this account to my Gmail just like in option 2 (however, not sure if / how well this would work). Or I just import my Gmail inbox to ProtonMail and ditch Gmail now (I'd prefer not to make the move for now though).

  4. Same as 3, but with SimpleLogin (~30$ / year) with this guide. IIUC, SimpleLogin would use my Gmail as the inbox, and just act as a forwarder. I'm not sure how feasible this is (I've seen others have issues with this setup).

I'd prefer something that optimizes for simplicity and would allow me to keep my current Gmail as the primary inbox. Did I get anything wrong? What would you recommend? What were your experiences in setting up a custom domain for your email?

Thanks!

r/Entrepreneur on Reddit: Use Gmail to Send Email from Custom Domains for Free
May 28, 2015 -

Gmail is great. It is powerful, sleek and easy to use.

Sending emails from an @gmail address works for personal situations. Sending emails from @mydomain.com is necessary in professional and business settings. If you are on a shoestring, and I mean shoestring budget you may not want to shell out the $5 or $10 a month for Google apps to configure your custom domain email address. Fortunately, there is a relatively straightforward way to get around this.

There are only three steps involved, and you don’t need to be technically savvy to set this up.

  • Enable email forwarding

  • Setup SMTP server

  • Create a Gmail alias

Email forwarding

We want to use an email forwarding and simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) service. Here are a list of email forwarding and SMTP services that have “free” pricing tiers that you can use.

  • mailgun

  • Mandrill

  • Zoho

  • SendGrid

SendGrid allows free users to send 12,000 emails a month. That is the most of the four companies listed above. For the example below I am going to be using mailgun. If you want to use Zoho check out this comprehensive tutorial.

SMTP server

Go to mailgun and signup for an account with your @gmail email address. Make sure you use your @gmail address – you will need to do this to verify your account.

After you confirm your account log in. Click on the Domain tab in the main navigation. Click Add New Domain and add your domain name.

Follow the domain name server (DNS) instructions and add the DNS records with the service that manages your DNS.

I manage my DNS with DigitalOcean.com, adding new records there is really easy.

If you registered your domain name with GoDaddy or Namecheap and are not sure how to set up DNS records simply google “how to set up DNS records with XXXX”. There are plenty of tutorials out there.

Click back on Domains, and then click on your domain name. Click on Manage SMTP credentials. Enter your email, and password.

This is the most “technical” aspect of setting up your custom domain with Gmail.

Mailgun routes

Remember email forwarding that I mentioned above? Now we are going to set that up with Mailgun routing.

Click on the Routes tab and then click on Create New Route. Enter the following information:

Be sure to replace the email addresses in the quotation marks with your desired email addresses.

Gmail alias

Next, go to Accounts and Import settings page in Gmail. Click on Add another email address you own under the Send mail as section.

Enter the email address that you just set up in mailgun and press next.

  • Server: smtp.mailgun.org

  • Port: 587

  • Username: the full email address, e.g. “[email protected]

  • Password: the password you set in mailgun SMTP Credentials

Click Add Account and you are done! You can easily set your new email address to be your default on the Accounts and Import settings page.

There you go, 10,000 free emails per month from your custom domain name!

If you got stuck check out the tutorial on my blog with images - maybe those will help. Or, if you are still stuck as a question here and I will help.

I use my custom domain name email when cold-emailing companies and reaching out to business contacts. I will write another tutorial on how to set up a free CRM with gmail so that you can track and organize your interactions in your professional life.

So I'm not entirely sure if this fits into this subreddit but I will post this anyway.

I've wanted to set up mail with my own custom domain because I thought it would be a cool thing. I've hosted my own mailcow server which worked incredibly well, but I didn't like the sogo web app. Now I've bought Zoho Mail for 0,9€ a month and now that I switched to there I actually started asking myself "Why did I even switch from my gmail?". After a while I right now feel like this custom domain stuff is completely useless and I should've just stayed with my gmail and my google calendar, which I can link and synchronize with many other tools

Edit: I just thought about the best way might be to have that mail for some special things and just leave the rest and my calendar stuff via google since I’m struggling to find a good calendar setup with my custom mail

Background - I've been running my own Exchange server for close to 20 years, but recently have decided to transition fully to Gmail as Exchange stand alone is pretty much dead thanks to O365 (at least for IT knowledge/consulting). I have spent a few hours looking at the options for custom domains with Gmail and it seems like Workspace for Business Starter is the cheapest option for the functionality, however, I don't really want to have two mailboxes and instead would like to just use my personal Gmail with my custom domains as aliases.

Is this even possible anymore? I feel like I set this up for friends in the past that wanted a custom domain with their Gmail but did this get trashed with the migration of GSuite?

Any suggestions on what might fit my use case the best would be greatly appreciated!

So from what I understand (and my understanding might be mistaken), when I want to get a custom email domain, I can choose literally anything I like. This doesn't really make sense to me because when I want to use a normal web domain (for a website), it needs to be one I own.

To give you an example of what I mean, Google owns the gmail.com web domain, and so when I send an email to an account that has @gmail.com it goes to Google servers. That makes sense.

I want to get a custom email domain for my imaginary business, and I want it to be @inbox.com, but I don't own the web domain inbox.com.

If my understanding is right, even though I don't own the inbox.com website, I can still receive emails with an @inbox.com domain through Google's custom email domain service. How is that possible? Why wouldn't emails sent to that account go to a server that isn't mine?

If my understanding is mistaken, then I must own the web domain before I can setup an email domain as well, right?

FWIW, I do have some understanding of DNS and how the web works in general

I need help understanding how this works, please! I want to set up a website and corresponding email address for my small business. My work involves sending and receiving large documents, so it's important that I don't run out of email space.

My plan is to buy a custom domain (e.g. www.qiba.com – a fake example) and then set up an email address such as [email protected]. I understand that I have to purchase some amount of email hosting to get this email address – for example, this could be a package with 5GB of email capacity. I want to then access the email address via Gmail (just because I like using that platform).

If I did this, would I have access to the 15GB of free storage that comes with a Gmail account? Or would I be limited to the 5GB I'd paid my domain provider for?

When Google said we could get use Gmail with a custom domain, I thought that was so cool. So, I ordered my custom domain and setup Gmail with my domain for my family.

I enjoyed supporting it.

People thought I was cool (or at least I thought they did) because I had a custom domain for my email.

Fast forward to, today. For personal email addresses, nobody cares if someone is using a Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo email address. They've become the free email providers for the world.

I'm much more excited about a custom domain than my family is. They would be fine with a regular Gmail account for their email.

It would certainly be a lot less support work on my part if I didn't have a custom domain and email to manage for family.

Part of me thinks about just setting up email forwarding with my registrar to forward to my family's Gmail accounts and call it a day.

But the other part of me still loves the cool factor of having a custom email address.

Hi there!

For me and my family i bought a custom Domain we can use for our e-mail addresses. It's something like doe.family, so a sample address would be [email protected]. Since we like Gmail including it's features (automatic categorization and so on) i wanted to somehow add these new mail addresses to gmail. I already searched a lot, but cannot figure out what is possible or what would be the best way. Here's what i know so far:

  • There is Google Workplace, but it seems it's not for private use? Also, would i have to pay 5-6€ for every new email account per month?

  • You can pay for a email hosting somewhere else and "integrate" it in Gmail with IMAP/SMTP, but with that, as far as i understand, you lose the Gmail features

  • You can use the Gmail "Gmailify" Service to keep the features, but this doesn't work with custom domains

  • There's also a service gmailify.com which is different and NOT from Google. It looks like it does what i want, but all of this seems a bit fishy... Same name as a google-owned service and overall, all of the text there reads like "too good to be true"

So what are my options, how can i use Gmail with all of its features with my own domain? During ordering the domain i thought this would be a lot easier :D

Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone, I didn't know in which subreddit to ask this question so if there is a more appropriate one please forward me there. If this one is okay as well, I thought since most of you do a lot of Web development, you could possibly help me out.

What I'm in need of is a custom domain name for the emails for my business. What I've gathered so far is that I need to buy a domain and I should also have an email service provider connected to that domain?

I've checked out Google Workspace and it seems like it has everything except annual payment which I would prefer. Are there any other good options besides Google Workspace that would be simple to set up and would have an annual payment option. What would your advice be? Any help is appreciated, thank you! :)

Yes, you are correct in thinking that you will need to purchase a domain name and an email service provider to create custom email addresses for your business. There are many different options available for both of these things, and the best one for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences. In terms of email service providers, Google Workspace (formerly known as G Suite) is a popular choice, but it does not offer an annual payment option. However, there are other options out there that do offer annual payment plans, such as Microsoft 365 and Zoho Mail. Both of these options include a variety of tools for email, collaboration, and productivity, and they allow you to create custom email addresses with your own domain name. When it comes to purchasing a domain name, you can do this through a domain registrar such as GoDaddy, Namecheap, or 1&1 Ionos. These companies will allow you to search for and purchase a domain name that is available and meets your needs. Once you have purchased your domain, you will need to connect it to your email service provider so that you can create custom email addresses using that domain. In summary, to set up custom email addresses with your own domain name, you will need to: Purchase a domain name through a domain registrar Sign up for an email service provider that offers annual payment plans Connect your domain to your email service provider Create custom email addresses using your domain name I hope this helps. Good luck with your business!

Depends on where you buy your domain, one business mail could be included. For example, my customers buy often their domains at "ionos", a german domain hoster. After buying a domain there, you can choose one business mail for free. I'm sure there are similar offers in your country.
