r/ShopifyAppDev on Reddit: Are Shopify Apps dead for newcomers?

So hereโ€™s the deal:

Iโ€™m following this guy on Twitter - DsMatie. Heโ€™s great and all. He built a Shopify App in 2020, and now it makes around $50K MRR, which sounds like a dream come true for me.

Inspired by those numbers, I decided to create my own Shopify App - Push Down & Hide Out-of-Stock. I launched it 3 months ago and have managed to make a whopping $15 since then.

I get that my app is much smaller and should never make $50K MRR, but still. I think 2020 was a great year to start a Shopify App because, due to COVID restrictions, Shopify experienced explosive growth in new stores. If your store was new, you'd look for new apps. If your store has been around for a couple of years, it's unlikely you'd look for alternative apps.

What I mean is: If a store owner wanted to handle the "Out-of-Stock" sorting, they probably already did if their store has been running for a couple of years.

A couple of other worries I have:

  • There arenโ€™t many things you can do for an online store, and most are already done by existing apps.

  • The Shopify Apps market is highly competitive, so it's a tough journey to start as a solo developer.

Does anyone have experience building Shopify Apps lately? Can you please prove me wrong? I'm looking into creating a new app now that I know which apps are in higher demand than mine. But Iโ€™m concerned that Shopify Apps isnโ€™t a great market to start in right now.

Absolutely not. Shopify app market is still full of opportunities that newcomers can grab. I have 3 apps running successfully on Shopify market and constantly launching small apps to test different markets and solutions. I launch an app a month ago and getting good response on that. There are some categories which can be tough, but what I've learned so far after researching few categories is that merchants are looking for exact solutions to their problems, they don't want to long setup process and advance features. Already established apps have become so advance by adding features every now and then that merchants don't want to get involve in that just to solve a simple problem. So there is opportunity for new apps for simple solutions. Because of the competition, chances of failure would be greater if you build the whole app and launch it and keep investing on it to market it, it has now become like launching a SaaS product. You have to build a very minimal version, test it on a market for few months and take decision on the basis of your learnings. Good luck! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

Hey! I am the author of the post. I forgot to mention that I've spent $350 while building this app: $100 - promo video for App - which I've removed since then $70 - designs $150 - ads on Facebook and directly in Shopify $80 - server Which leads to minus $335 for 3 months :) So building a new app would be around the same in terms of direct cost. Please help me to change my mind and share your experience if you've started a successful Shopify App lately!

r/shopify on Reddit: Useful Shopify Apps Nobody Talks About
January 4, 2025 -

Hey everyone, I previously asked about some useful Shopify apps that donโ€™t get much attention in this subreddit, and after doing a bit of research, I wanted to share the best apps I found. These are the ones that, based on my research and the comments, seem really worth checking out and deserve to be more mainstream. (I havenโ€™t personally tried ALL of them, but I made sure to include only apps with the best reviews)

1 - Vitals: Reviews, Bundles, AI โ€“ This is basically the Swiss Army Knife of apps, packed with features to boost your storeโ€™s performance. Here are some of the most best features:

Upsell Funnels: Basically you can make as many product bundles as you want to boost sales like pre-set bundles or let people pick their items. You can also offer things like โ€˜Buy One Get Oneโ€™ or set discounts or lower prices when people buy more or hit certain quantities in their cart.

Wishlist: Let customers save their fav products for later.

Stock Scarcity: Add urgency with limited stock notifications. (only 3 left in stock)

Countdown Timer: Push limited-time offers with real-time timers. (5:24:32 left before sale ends)

Trust Badges & Payment Logos: Build trust with familiar payment logos and badges.

Back-in-Stock Alerts: Notify customers when out-of-stock products return.

Email & Pop-ups: Grow your list with pop-ups and email capture tools.

Product Reviews

Spin the Wheel: Let customers play for discounts & gifts

Pre-Orders: Let customers order out-of-stock items and get it when available.

Instant Search: Help visitors find products faster with predictive search.

Cookie Banner: Comply with GDPR with a cookie consent banner.

Announcement Bars: Display customizable bar for promotions, shipping info, or alerts at the top.

Product Labels: Add "New", "Sale", or "Hot" labels on product images.

Gift with Purchase: Give away free gifts on certain conditions.

Goals: Set sales goals and reward customers when they hit them.

And even more features I wonโ€™t be able to fit here

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2 - BackupMaster Backups โ€“ Automatically backs up everything in your store, so if something goes wrong or your store crashes, you can restore it all.

3 - Parcel Panel Order Tracking โ€“ Gives you a branded, customizable tracking page for orders with real-time updates and automated shipping notifications.

4 - Section Store โ€“ Allows you to add customizable sections to your Shopify theme without any coding.

5 - Try Before You Buy App โ€“ Lets customers try products before committing to a purchase. If they donโ€™t return it within the specified timeframe, their credit card is charged automatically.

6 - AI Chat Bot โ€“ Automates customer support with AI-driven chatbots (mostly used for tracking updates and FAQ). Free: Zendesk

7 - Page Builders โ€“ Gives you more freedom to customize your site without much coding knowledge. best are PageFly, Foxify, and Pagetify.

8 - Fraud prevention โ€“ Identifies and filters out fraudulent orders to protect your business.

9 - Shoptools - discount link generator - creates links that auto apply discounts and links that go straight to checkout with the product in cart. Perfect for emails or ad campaign conversions

Quick tip: Keep in mind that installing too many apps can slow down your site, You donโ€™t want to overload your site with apps that are redundant or donโ€™t serve a major purpose.

If you have other apps like these feel free to drop them in the comments Iโ€™ll do my best to keep this updated whenever I have time

I'm a newbie to Shopify and I saw numerous Shopify apps listed on the store, and each of them costs like $5/mo (not too much, but will be expensive if I install 10). So just wanna know:

- What Shopify apps are you guys using?

- How much do you pay for them, in total?

- What Shopify apps are you think as essential (for a starter store)?

- Do you think those "conversion" apps really worth it (i.e. increases conversion, like countdown timer, sales pop, etc.)?

Many thanks!

Hi everyone! Iโ€™m just starting to explore Shopify apps, and Iโ€™m wondering if theyโ€™re worth the cost in the long run. I know there are tons of apps for everything from Google Shopping Feed to email marketing and SEO optimization. But Iโ€™m trying to figure out if all these extra features are really going to drive more sales or just add unnecessary complexity.

  • Which Shopify apps do you consider essential and why?

  • Have any of you found apps that were actually a waste of money or overcomplicated things?

  • How do you know when an app is truly worth it for your store?

Looking forward to hearing what works for you!

Here's my list: Context: I'm a 7 figure shopify plus store in the beauty space. SMSBump (I found it a lot better than Attentive, Postscripts etc.) PushOwl (Cheap easy way to generate a little more site traffic using push notifications) Navidium APP **(**My App - But I'm an actual merchant/customer)(Allows you to create your own shipping insurance, collect it from customers and manage claims when customers have their package lost, damaged, or stolen during delivery. It makes us $7k-$15k a month in added revenue) Rebuy Personalization Engine (Powers all our upsells, post purchase upsells, cart upsells, checkout upsells and is AMAZING) SEO Manager (I use it to solve 301 redirects, deal with 404 pages, optimize listings, and even hide products from our site index and search. It's an absolute MUST) Ultimate Special offers (Not the biggest fan of Pixel Union but this app is huge for us. We use it to create hidden sales that are only activated with url paramaters for retention customers. It helps keep mystery alive and has been a massive money maker. Those are sort of my bread and butter. Of course we have all the typical stuff:RechargeKlaviyoBack in StockMeta Fieldsand some other random stuff. But in general we like to create as much functionality ourselves as we can and only resort to apps when the upside is so high it doesn't make sense to develop ourselves. But... we are home to a 5 person dev team full time so.....

Hey,

As the title says - interested in seeing what apps people are using. Whatโ€™s the best app stack?

Some apps offer multiple features in one app (eg. reviews + loyalty), whereas some may prefer to have single apps for each feature.

Currently doing $15k / month and am looking for the best setup to grow with. Iโ€™d prefer to keep costs on the lower end where possible - some apps will charge $100+ per month for the same features you can get through another $30 app.

Hereโ€™s what Iโ€™m looking at..

โ€”-

Recurring Order Subscriptions - Appstle subscriptions - $10/month

Loyalty program - Appstle - $30/month

Bundles - Pumper bundles of Rebolt - free or $20/month for up to $5000 sales

Reviews - Judge.me - free

Would love to hear your thoughts!

r/shopify on Reddit: Why are so many popular and expensive Shopify Apps so bad?
May 23, 2024 -

I have been working with an online retailer for a while and have been involved in finding and using apps for their site.

It seems like many popular apps I have come across are embarrassingly buggy and bad. Almost all of them are not at a โ€œproductionโ€ level quality for an app.

For example - one particular app has a csv upload function I went to use. It was completely broken and unusable. Working with support teams it seemed like they were developing it as they went whilst I was a test dummy. Meanwhile they get $40 a month in subscription fees.

Another (popular and expensive) app was installed on a new theme. It turns out this new version has no customisation and we had to delay the publishing of a new theme for 2 months. There was no way to roll back the version so after a month of back and forth support we finally got their support to roll back to a previous version which allowed customisation. Mind you they even admitted that their most recent version didnโ€™t have all the finished features yet.

Many of these apps, there is no proper documentation - just a few crappy screenshots and a poorly made video with no sound to tech you how to use it.

It just blows my mind the mediocrity of all these app providers. Surely there is a better way.

For a platform so widely used the offerings in the APP Store are not very good. Most APP's have very few reviews. Those that they do have seem dubious at best. They do not show "active users" or installs the way other places do (WordPress Extensions).
It is always a chore to FIND an ADD, then you have to install it to actually see if it will do what you need. I always go through several before settling on an acceptable one.

It is just an overall bad experience when it comes to Finding a Good APP.
