make is in the make package, part of the "Development Tools" group which you should install before attempting to build anything.

What was the reasoning for Red Hat making RHEL free for production use?
I can only speculate but it is likely to make up for moving CentOS upstream of RHEL. The reason people decided to pay for RHEL was sometimes because they wanted the support, but most often purchasing RHEL license was a requirement for a application, contract, or hardware they are running. Redhat works with ISVs, storage vendors, and others to get RHEL on as officially supported operating system. If you purchase a big SAN or want commercial support for a application stack or SQL database then you have to run it on certified hardware and/or with certified drivers and/or on a certified OS, etc etc. If you were try to run it on Debian then you are on your own. Also sometimes governments or other industries have requirements that must be met. Like FIPS. RHEL supports that stuff so it is possible to run Linux in places were otherwise you can't. However this causes problems when customers try to do funny business... like purchasing one license, but then running CentOS on dozens of machines. So when something goes wrong they try to swap out the CentOS for RHEL (or whatever) on that one system to try to get support. So this move was likely because Redhat want to cut down on such shenanigans and get smaller businesses using RHEL, while making it easier for their ISVs. So when smaller businesses become bigger then they are more likely to start paying for services. More on reddit.com

Can someone please explain how the hell red hat earns so much?
Large companies and government tend to pay for support for everything. And yes, if you are a paying Red Hat customer and something is broken, it can result in actual bugfix work by RHEL devs to fix your issue upstream. More on reddit.com

r/linux on Reddit: What was the reasoning for Red Hat making RHEL free for production use?
April 3, 2024 -

As some people may know, for a while now, the mighty Red Hat Enterprise Linux has been made available completely for free for production use on up to 16 machines, physical or virtual… No matter if it’s for server, workstation or simple desktop use.

But in your opinion, why did Red Hat do it? To discourage people from using Rocky or Alma?

Because RedHat isn't making money off of me, some person using it at their house, they're making their money from me, the person in the company with a contract because we need commercial-level support at our commercial-level corporation.

The System and Arch are optional added filters, for example System could be "redhat", "redhat-7.2", "mandrake" or "gnome", Arch could be "i386" or "src", etc. depending on your system. This is the GNU variant of make(1).

An open source company worth 34 billion dollars (how much IBM payed to acquire it) like howww?? I get that ppl pay for support but that's it it's just support not like bugfixes will only be done if you pay us money etc etc. I have used 20+ linux distros including arch and gentoo and with some searching around or asking on reddit or discord is enough to get support. Sure I break my system a lot that usually doesn't get solved by those methods but that's bc I tinker a lot. RHEL is not a rolling release or hard distro that you can break on a daily basis. Red Hat's target consumer i.e. buisness people, won't be tinkering they will just be working. So, how do they earn so much with just support and what kind of support is it that people pay for that? I was actually surprised that a red hat office is in my city so might go there for just seeing what they actually do lmao.
