October 19, 2023Is Redshift Serverless same as Redshift?
Redshift Serverless is the serverless side of your typical Redshift Instance. For the most part it’s the same excluding costs and instance speed/nodes as serverless manages that aspect differently. We’ve been using it the same way as we use standard instances since preview. If you are only using it every 4 hours for a few seconds/minutes it’s probably more cost effective than a typical instance with auto-shutoff, BUT, without knowing actual times used and workloads required I don’t think I could definitively answer that. August 3, 2022Experiences with Redshift Serverless
We tested it out and during preview it didn’t make sense for our workloads. Performance wasn’t good enough and the fact that you could only have one per account was a major hinderance. Now that the price was lowered and you can have multiple endpoints per account, we’re going to re-evaluate and re-test in the coming months. We have dozens of clusters and I believe once the reservations are up within the next 36 months we’ll switch some of the lesser powered ones over to redshift serverless. More on reddit.com

Amazon Redshift Serverless uses a pay-as-you-go model, where you're charged only for the compute capacity you actually use, measured down to the second. This means you only pay when queries are being processed, and there are no costs during idle periods.
On the other hand, provisioned clusters operate on an hourly billing model. Here, you're charged for the resources you allocate - like compute nodes and storage - whether or not they're being fully utilized. While this approach offers cost predictability, it can lead to higher expenses if resources sit idle.

I haven't used any serverless service of AWS and thinking of using Redshift serverless for one of the newest service we are building.
In documentations price is mentioned as below :
Redshift Processing Unit - $0.36 per RPU hour
So does that mean if I have provisioned 8 RPU and on average during that day I used 4 RPU per hour then the daily cost would be : 4 * 0.36 * 24
I just need some clarity around this. Also how much data 1 RPU can handle?
