Compute capacity for Amazon Redshift Serverless - Amazon Redshift
You can set a base capacity in Redshift Processing Units (RPUs). Setting a higher base capacity ensures improves query performance , especially for data processing jobs that require a lot of resources. The default base capacity for Amazon Redshift Serverless is 128 RPUs.

Unveiling Redshift Serverless Limitations (2024): Master Its Hidden Hurdles for Peak Performance & Cost Savings
The primary Redshift Serverless limitations can be categorized as: Concurrency and Performance Throttling: While Serverless scales automatically, there are practical limits to its instantaneous scaling. Very high, sudden spikes in concurrent complex queries might experience queuing or slower response times compared to a meticulously tuned provisioned cluster with reserved concurrency slots. AWS sets internal maximum RPU limits per workgroup.

How a Silent Redshift Serverless Pricing Change Spiked Our Costs — and What We Did About It | by Ryan Wood | Medium
September 30, 2025 - In our case, this was 8 RPUs. These two discoveries shed quite a bit of light on the billing problems we were facing. Even if a query ran for 1 second on our workgroup, we would be billed for a full 480 seconds of usage, costing $0.0658. This means that, contrary to traditional engineering best practice, it is actually cheaper to burst as much work on a Redshift workgroup as possible, ensuring that as much capacity can be used over that period, and then not using it at all.

February 17, 2026 - In a provisioned cluster, you buy nodes (like ra3.4xlarge). In Redshift Serverless, you consume Redshift Processing Units (RPUs). One RPU provides 16 GB of memory. The default Redshift processing unit setting is often too low for production.

Unleash Serverless Redshift (2024): Revolutionize Data Warehousing & Slash Costs – What's the Secret?
Key characteristics of serverless Redshift: On-demand capacity: It automatically provisions and scales compute capacity as needed for your workloads. You don't choose node types or sizes. Pay-per-use billing: You pay only for the compute capacity consumed while your workloads are running, measured in Redshift Processing Units (RPUs) per second.

November 21, 2023 - According to this doc an RPU is 2 virtual CPUs and 16 GB of RAM, which is roughly equivalent to a single dc2.large node, so the Serverless cluster should be twice as powerful as the Provisioned one.

Redshift Serverless Pricing - by Adam Kabak - Twing Data
February 11, 2025 - While traditional serverless leverages multi-tenant compute infrastructure, Redshift Serverless, under the hood, is actually running on clusters of nodes identical to those that can be configured and run manually. Rather than accessing a shared, always-on system of clusters for compute, Redshift’s version merely manages an isolated system on the user’s behalf and prices compute in Redshift Processing Units (RPU).

With Redshift Serverless you do not provision nodes. Instead you start with Base RPU, which is Redshift Processing Units. You can go as high as 512 RPU's. Redshift Serverless handles the provisioning and scaling of compute for you. The serverless instance can scale higher from the Base RPU to accommodate more queries as they come in automatically up to the usage limit you specify in Max RPU's. Recently announced configurations of 8 RPU and 16 RPU support Redshift managed storage (RMS) capacity of up to 128 TB. If you're using more than 128 TB of managed storage, you can't downgrade to less than 32 RPU. Max storage for Redshift Serverless is 8 PB of RMS for 512 RPUs.

The maximum limit on the amount of data that can be stored with AWS Redshift Serverless depends on the size of the cluster, which can scale dynamically based on workload demands. AWS Redshift Serverless allows you to store petabytes of data in a cost-effective manner without having to manage complex infrastructure or manually scaling your cluster. The amount of data you can store depends on the size of the cluster you provision, which can be scaled up or down based on your workload requirements. With AWS Redshift Serverless, you can scale your cluster from 1 to 128 compute nodes, and each node can have up to 60TB of storage. This means that the maximum amount of data you can store with AWS Redshift Serverless is up to 7.68 petabytes (assuming 128 nodes, each with 60TB of storage). It's worth noting that the actual amount of data you can store may be less than the maximum limit due to other factors, such as compression, replication, and other metadata that is stored in your cluster.

Amazon Redshift pricing: What to expect and how it compares
November 10, 2025 - In us-east-1 examples, the published RPU rate is about $0.375/RPU-hr; with 4 RPUs that’s roughly $1.50 per hour of active time. Spectrum and Concurrency Scaling are included in the Serverless price. Good fits: Infrequent, spiky, or unpredictable workloads; ad-hoc analytics; dev/test; external data sharing. You don’t manage clusters, and you don’t pay when idle beyond the minimum billed seconds per execution window. Redshift Managed Storage (RMS): Billed hourly and aggregated monthly as $0.024/GB-month in us-east-1 (varies by Region).
