I found a refurbished pixel 6 in excellent condition for $260. My only worry with this is the page says excellent condition phones have at least 80% battery life. That seems bad but I guess I don't really know.
Alternatively I can get a new 6a for $300.
Which one should I get?

If you need a phone now, and have to buy something, I would personally go for the 6a if that is your budget. Yes, the 6 is technically superior, and I love my 6, but I waited till a good deal appeared and went for it then. Better to get a new phone than a refurbished one if you can. If you can wait for your next phone, as in what you have is running well and you could go for another 6 months with it, why not wait for the Pixel 7a that is rumoured and leaked. https://www.xda-developers.com/google-pixel-7a-first-look/ Both the 6 and the 6a are good phones.
