I'm looking to get a cheapish micro form factor machine for an elderly person because the Chromebox they are using now doesn't get any more support and they were really never that happy with ChromeOS anyway and want to get back to a "real" computer. I found that the OptiPlex 3080s are probably what we want : https://www.dellrefurbished.com/item/dell-optiplex-3080-mff-6261a007/dell-optiplex-3080-mff/1.html?child=dell-optiplex-3080-mff-000078&p=1 but they all come with Windows 10 Pro. They have 10th Gen intel CPUs so they should be compatible with Windows 11, but I'm wondering if there is anything preventing me from updating it once I get it. It seems weird that Dell already didn't update them.
I posted about getting a refurbished Optiplex 3080 which had a few issues - Power cord had intermittent connection, board had a "burnt electronic" smell, and CMOS battery was dead and so I contacted Dell and they were really awesome and issued an RMA immediately without hassle.
The only thing is that the new unit doesn't have a wireless card like the last one did. I noticed it didn't come with the screw on antenna and there wasn't even a space for it in the back and when I started the machine, the ethernet port was the only choice. Fortunately, the router is in the general vicinity so I plugged it in and the rest of the machine works great and doesn't have the same issues the last one had but I'm curious if this is to be expected with refurbished items. Was the wireless card on these units an optional add-on and with the refurbished models just a luck of the draw as to which one we get? I already spent a few hours updating it to Windows 11 and setting it up for the elderly person who will use it so I'm not even thinking about sending this one back but was just curious. Worse comes to worst I'll just use a USB wireless adapter.
