Refurbished workstations are insane deal for gaming on a budget
the main reason to go with ryzen is that new parts or available. Also in a few years you can upgrade to ryzen 7 or even 9. Some people like to have new parts for "perceived reliability" in this case you'll be stuck with ryzen 5 power for the rest of your life. Unless some chinese savior decides to remap pins again and make lga 2066 compatible with 2011 *hahahaha* More on reddit.com

Best value dell refurbished workstation?
We watch ebay for most of our shop test systems. We’ve grabbed a few 7810’s and 5810’s with way more memory than we’d ever need for a few hundred bucks. Sadly they lack NVMe but with a boss card they still perform quite well. Good enough for general purpose VM test rigs. Otherwise, 3620/3630 are relatively inexpensive as well and support one NVMe. I don’t recall if the 3650 has dual NVMe or not, 3660’s do but their the current model so you’ll pay a premium. More on reddit.com

Help needed, want to buy refurbished DELL PRECISION 5540 for $890. Is that a good price?
too expensive. even with a 4k touch display it should be no more than $600. these are 5-ish years old. you will probably need a new battery as well. More on reddit.com

Do Used/Refurbished Precision Workstations have a Windows license?
It depends. If it originally came with Windows (and hasn't had the motherboard replaced), it should still have the key embedded in BIOS. If it originally came with a different OS, it likely does not have a key embedded in BIOS. More on reddit.com

r/lowendgaming on Reddit: Refurbished workstations are insane deal for gaming on a budget
February 16, 2020 -

There are many videos and guides explaining how to turn an old office PC into an affordable gaming machine. But their cases are small, PSU weak, cooling sucks and forget about high amount of RAM... In my opinion a workstation solves most of those problems. I've bought used/refurbished Dell Precision T3600 for $180 - E5-1620 (4c/8t @ 3,60 GHz), 4 GB ECC RAM, 685W PSU. It's main advantages are:

  • CPU performance +/- just as good as highest end 3-4rd gen i7 AND can be upgraded to 6 or 8 core Xeon

  • Takes almost any GPU. From GT 710 to RTX 2080

  • ECC RAM is cheap as hell, 64 GB will cost you less than 16 GB non-ECC DDR4

  • Build quality and QoL stuff like hot swappable PSU or tool less installation

And it still costs less than a current gen Ryzen 5/i5 with an ok motherboard!

Do you need even more performance? There are dual CPU models like T5600 or HP Z620
Cheaper? Xeon X based workstations often cost less than $100

I thought about getting an E5-1650 workstation back when they were $300ish on ebay, but ended up with an i5-4690k deal of the century and took it ($15 for motherboard, CPU, and RAM new in the box.) My sister has a Dell T3500 Xeon W3680 1366 socket workstation. We ended up about 2-3 years ago (height of the mining boom) buying it as she wanted something to play the Sims 4 on. We ended up right at $325-350 for the workstation with a Xeon W3680, 24gb ECC RAM, 120gb SSD, 1tb normal hard drive, and a $30 HD6850. Came with a license for Windows 7 Pro on it, too. It wasn't the absolute fastest we could buy, but it was definitely easy, and I figured going for a higher multithread rating than something with a high single thread but lower multithread would be better for her as she said she eventually wanted to get into making Youtube videos and editing. Overall she likes it a lot. I personally like them as they're built really solidly, and have stock 400-500w PSUs with six pins already there. I do know a downside is you can only use OEM PSUs on them without rewiring, but I've heard good things about their stock PSUs. I tend to go the used workstation route for family, friends, and acquaintances that need PCs, as the costs are usually lower than building them, and there's less to screw with (I plugged a hard drive and GPU into my sister's box) compared to building one. Plus, since it's Dell, HP, etc, you'll get less stupid accusations like "hurr durr you built my PC and I got a virus and it's YOUR FAULT because you built it" type nonsense.
