REI Flexlite Air
Based on our first-hand testing, the Flexlite Air is a standout. It ranks at the top of our list while costing much less than other premium backpacking chairs. We’re especially impressed with the way REI balanced this chair’s weight and packability with its comfort and support. The REI Flexlite Air Chair gets our vote as the best value in backpacking chairs. It only weighs one pound while providing the comfort, back support, and packability we want out of a backpacking chair. Gear analyst Jory Brass has been using his Flexlite since 2015, so he was stoked to compare REI’s newest model to 10 ot

We definitely find this chair to be less secure than others and, while we never completely tipped over, we can't totally relax in its frame. The regular REI flexlite chair is 11 oz heavier than the flexlite Air, but I’ve sat it in the heavier version (friend has it) and I know it’s fairly comfortable. Also $30 cheaper than the Air version. Is the Air as comfortable and do you find it worth the extra money and less weight?
I’m a “casual” backpacker, and basically always with my partner when on a trip which helps split the weight of our tent, etc. I’m a small person so I do need to keep weight to a minimum but I’m not at the serious ultralight level of backpacking.
Before you tell me to just sit on the ground or a pad, I’ve already decided on getting a chair. Just a matter of which one.

I think the weight of these would be the clear difference: Flexlite - 1 lbs 11 ounces Flexlite Air - 1 lbs Eleven ounces of extra weight is a LOT. Saving $30 in exchange for that weight penalty, especially over the long haul, is not worth it in my opinion. As other folks have said the Helinox Chair Zero is a strong contender. It's a bit more expensive but has 4.5 stars on REI, versus 4.2 stars for the Flexlite Air.

REI Co-op Flexlite Air
The REI Co-op Flexlite Air ($100) promises ultralight performance for backpackers who want more than just a foam pad at camp, but don’t want their kit weight to balloon. It succeeds in that respect as one of the lightest chairs on the market, but it doesn’t quite deliver on the comfort side. We put the REI Co-op Flexlite Air camping chair to the test and rate it based on comfort, stability, ease of use, portability, sustainability, and more.

Lightweight Backpacking Chairs: REI Flexlite Air Chair vs. Helinox Chair Zero - Backpacking Light
November 15, 2025 - To save additional weight, you have to give up four-leg stability and/or ground clearance (e.g., the Alite Mayfly), use a chair without a supportive, cradling seat (e.g., the Trail Chair), use a chair without a supportive backrest (e.g., a bear canister or stool), or just sit on a little piece of foam (which really only serves to keep your butt dry and clean, offer no biomechanical advantages whatsoever). My current chair of choice is the REI Flexlite Air Chair.
