Microsoft apparently made it so this is the way links in the web version of excel work now and there is no fix -- it's a built-in 'feature' ---according to the answer from a Microsoft moderator. Please fix this why would a built in feature require additional key strokes to work. 959 complaints on this thread and 1200 on the linked one here ! 5)Uncheck the Option: In the "ScreenTip" dialog box, you may see an option that says "Ctrl + click to follow link". Uncheck this option if it's checked.
There is no such option there or anywhere else in Excel for Mac. If you can prove otherwise please provide a screen shot & specific version info.
Well, I just figured it out.
The 2 problem hyperlinks were vendor business names that use "sensational spelling" and were flagged as misspelled words. Clicking "add to dictionary" on both names did the trick and now the hand icon now appears for them.
Sensational spelling is when a brand intentionally misspells their name - like Lyft, Tumblr, Krispy Kreme, Crumbl.
I'm not sure why Microsoft Word has it set up that way - especially when so many vendors today use sensational spelling. Why is the hand icon disabled for words not found in the dictionary, but the CTRL + Click still works? It makes no sense to me.
Do you see a pattern? For example, is there a difference between internal links (to bookmarks) and external links (to web sites)? Or is there something else that you have noticed?
I started having the same issue this week. I have hundreds of documents in SharePoint and a main index for ease of reference. All of my links contained in Excel now require the user to ctrl + click to open them. I have searched for a solution but have not found one. Hopefully this get's corrected soon as it is a major step back in my opinion.
Hi, thank you for reaching out. My name is Deeksha and I'm a Microsoft user like yourself and I will try to help you as best as I can today.
To make hyperlinks in Excel work automatically without needing to press Ctrl and click, you can adjust the settings in Excel. Here's how you can change this setting:
Open Excel and click on File > Options. In the Excel Options dialog box, select Advanced. Scroll down to the Editing options section. Uncheck the box next to Use CTRL + Click to follow hyperlink. Click OK to save your changes and close the dialog box. After doing this, clicking on hyperlinks should follow the link directly without needing the Ctrl key.
Try these steps and hopefully, it resolves your issue. In case you need further help or assistance, please let us know. You can also contact Microsoft Support if the problem persists.
