Dovetailed drawer fronts are nice and traditional for a reason but if you're only building one drawer it isn't worth buying an extra jig. As long as it's a rental I would go buy some #1 pine from a big box store that's 4" wide and butt joint the box or rabbet the face and call it a day. Also should dado a piece of plywood in the bottom but honestly for one box in a rental you can attach it any way you want More on reddit.com

The one from lowes is made from solid hardwood with dovetail joints (that are considered of the strongest type of joint) and fits without question.
The one from menards is made from plywood with butt joints (that are considered the weakest joint) and may need to be cut down to fit.

The front and back boards of the drawer are split. I realize it can’t be fixed with old handy wood glue but can I find wood pieces to simple replace the broken boards or do I need to replace the whole thing?
I thought this would be an easy thing to find to buy or replace but a custom drawer box looks to be about $50. Trying to find a cheaper diy solution of wood, type, what and where to buy?

Possible? Yes. Worth it to save $50? Probably not, unless you have access to all the carpentry tools you'll need and the skills to use them. And then you'd probably end up rebuilding the whole box yourself anyway. Literally any piece of wood will be better then that cheap press board they used. Species doesn't matter. Cutting it exactly to the right dimensions and getting the dado exactly right to receive the drawer bottom matters a whole lot.
