Hey, BWT. I am in search of new and quality furniture for my place. Has anyone shopped at RH and/or West Elm outlets in Industry City BK and found decently discounted prices for some of their stuff (dressers, desks, buffet tables/tv consoles). The prices for either store normally are pretty steep, and I am trying to see if it’s worth my time to make a trip out there and drop some dough! TIA! 🙏

It's absolutely worth it, there's also ABC Carpet's outlet and Design Within Reach's outlet, and there's a Remix Market location. West Elm has a TON of consoles, they're an extra 40% off and there are big discounts on other categories too. DWR is 25% extra off the whole store too. Also, if it all fails you're really close to IKEA.

The Design Within Reach outlet is great and you can haggle. Sometimes there’s a posted extra 20% off but even if there’s not they’ll take at least that much off anything if you ask, and probably more. Salespeople there expect this and will not be offended by it at all and are generally super nice. Inventory changes a lot so worth going back every couple weeks if you don’t find something on your first visit. RH I have mixed feelings about. The people who work there suuuuuuuck in my experience—really hard to get them to help you or even acknowledge your presence. Maybe I didn’t look rich enough, but idk. It’s an outlet. Let’s not kid ourselves! I was in there with my measuring tape out sizing up one of their front-and-center display sofas and none of the employees would even make eye contact me. None of them were helping anyone else. I was actively trying to get their attention and they just would not acknowledge me at all. After a full 10 minutes of this, I finally physically got in one guy’s way so he had to stop or he’d run into me, and he seemed genuinely shocked that I spoke to him or had a real question. I asked if he could do any better on the couch I was ready to buy and he seemed offended I asked. I told him I had just come from DWR, where they are happy to discuss price, and walked directly back out of the store. That being said…if the guy has been even 10% nicer, I’d have bought the couch I was looking at on the spot without additional discount. Prices are pretty good and a lot of the stuff is in perfect or near-perfect condition. If you’re looking for a smaller non-cloud sofa in particular, you’ll have solid options for stuff from their most popular lines. If you’re not looking for a couch, the selection might be more limited—they devote the lion’s share of their floor space to upholstered furniture. West Elm, forget about it unless whatever you’re buying can be put in a vehicle you already have ready and waiting. You have to arrange your own delivery service otherwise, and everything must be picked up within 24 hours of purchase. They’ll give you a clipboard with a bunch of photocopied business cards of random guys with trucks and tell you to start calling to see who’s available before you buy anything large. I’m sorry, I’m just not doing that. I’d gladly pay $150-$250 for the store to figure it out but that option is not available. It may not be at DWR or RH either, idk because I didn’t get to delivery talks with them. But at least those places have furniture that’s actually high quality—a little frustration and hassle would be worth it for that stuff at a good price. West Elm is almost all crap, and honestly the outlet prices there often feel too high for what you get, even with whatever additional discount they’re running. Much of the outlet’s inventory is also visibly damaged, sometimes significantly so, and the prices are almost never low enough on those pieces to accommodate that, in my opinion. I ended up buying from ABC Carpet & Home, but be aware that most of the furniture in their IC location isn’t discounted—the store is a combo outlet/showroom, so check everything before you assume that anything has an additional discount or is priced below retail. But the people there are nice and the stuff is beautiful. Delivery is pricier than the national chains ($250) but it was prompt and with a very fast turnaround for an in-stock sofa that was on sale. Well worth it not to have to call around to a bunch of randos with trucks to see who can come get my stuff ASAP. While furnishing my current place, I’ve also bought things used from both Kaiyo and AptDeco and have been super pleased with both. (I also used AptDeco a few years back and had a great experience then too.) I got a vintage, solid oak Scandinavian modern dresser for $600, and something a similar size at West Elm would have cost $2k and been half particle board. Got a vintage sideboard—also in solid oak and a similar style—to hold my TV for $250, and an equivalent unit (or as close to it as possible) at a big chain store would have also been nearly $2k. Delivery is about $100 either place. If you’re looking for non-upholstered furniture, I REALLY REALLY recommend looking for used things. That’s where the best deals are by a long shot, and solid surfaces are ideal for secondhand.
