Smash Retail Arbitrage on Amazon (2025 Guide)
December 19, 2024 - Buying low from a retailer and selling at a higher price online is the key to retail arbitrage · Ok, so I’ll finally get round to sharing with you what I’d do with this possible retail flip. I scanned the item with Scoutify. The item is ranked 215,544, and the lowest FBA seller is Amazon selling it at $29.96. The app does the math for me and states that if I match the lowest FBA price, then I’d make a profit of over $18 per item.

I never had any luck with this business model. The problem is as soon as an item goes on clearance its on clearance nationwide so you are competing with every other flipper out there who thinks the same thing as you, buy the item and list it. This drives the price down on the items to where they are selling at the same price they were in the store. Between fees and expenses you are making literally no money. You would have to have a guaranteed $30-50 profit on each item after expenses to make it worthwhile. I've actually found clearance items that I could buy cheaper on ebay than in the store because all the flippers would go to the clearance rack, buy everything on the rack, list it on ebay and then be desperate to get rid of it all because it wasn't moving, so they would take a loss on the items just to get rid of it. Yes I have actually seen flippers clear the rack over here, insane, but I've seen it. Overall this benefits no one but the buyer looking for a cheap item to buy. More on reddit.com
Trying Retail Arbitrage, but Hitting a Wall!
RA can be feasible, even with Amazon fees. It just requires more work, though several factors have made RA less profitable with each passing year. You can also look into online arbitrage. Don't limit yourself to just Amazon. Check out eBay, Etsy, and others. You may get more for your item on there than you would on Amazon. Check out r/flipping as well. That might give you a bigger profit margin, and it has a lower cost of entry. More on reddit.com

Walmart has put the final nail in the coffin for retail arbitrage.
I get it but at the sametime walmart is probably sick of people who do the hidden clearance. There was a grown as man at my walmart once screaming and yelling at the employees because they would not let him buy the 3 cent video games. I heard the manager say the 3 cents is a code that means they are taking the items off the sales floor and no longer selling them, and they are not supposed to sell them but most workers do not know this so some sell them anyway. He was legit yelling at them telling them they are wrong and hes bought them before etc... I assume most people would just be like okay thats fine, but some people get really heated when they are told no. They probably want to lower that as much as they can. There is this youtuber who does this walmart hidden clearance and if you look at the comments they are all toxic to walmart workers becase some let him buy like 50% off pokemon game while other stores don't. The pandemic has brought out some of the worst people. They think they deserve to get their way with anything and will freak out on workers who are only there to stock shelves and check out items. If people didnt act crazy maybe walmart would not care as much. Ive seen more freakouts at walmart this year and last year then I ever have in my whole life. I also see a ton more resellers. One day I saw a group of 6 people in the lego aisle just scanning every item and giving each other dirty looks the whole time. Get your bag but don't make other people's lifes harder. but my walmart still has the price scanners, my town also is tiny so. More on reddit.com

How legit is retail arbitrage? On the appearance it seems like a hoax. If You buy an item at retail prices, with taxes, even if it’s on clearance, how in the world is there a profit? And with all the gated items? Is there something I am missing? My end goal is to get into wholesaling but I’m trying to rack up the cash between ebay/Amazon to get started without needing credit
Any tips, insight, opinions are all welcome, just want to make sure I am not missing anything. I do not have a professional store on Amazon or ebay, just the free basic ones for now

Hey, great question. I flip stuff too and use sites like Overstock, Wayfair, and liquidation/clearance sections of brand stores. Also came across a list on OABeans of some “hidden gem” online arbitrage sites in the U.S, helped me expand beyond the usual big retailers.
