I moved into this home Nov. 2023. Senior citizen on fixed income, so I peruse yard sales, antique and thrift shops for decor. I love vintage and country styles and I love some color!! The soda and loveseat are vintage, the paintings are all hand painted by my late father. Oh……. All my walls are white. It doesn't feel like a home and never has. It has no style at all. I've seen some pictures of how people go retro and I think it's really cool. Have any of you done this? It doesn't even have to be the entire house, perhaps just a room.
I am just terrible at these sorts of things and would appreciate any links or ideas that you have.
I like 60's/70's stuff. It just seems like homes were more "homey" back then and each one was different.
I honestly have no idea where to even begin.

Do not paint the walls first. That should be one of your last choices and not the first. It is much easier to match a paint to decor than it is to match decor to paint. First find an inspiration. I have a rug and a piece of art that I have used in 4 hours now as my inspiration pieces. Every home, of course, has been different, and I have added and deleted other pieces along the way, but those ground my space. Everything, with the exception of our beds and technology (for the most part), we have inherited, bought secondhand (thrift stores, antique stores, estate sales, estate auctions, consignment shops, yard sales, from neighbors), have been gifted, found on the street or in our old condominium trash room, and so on. Some things we restored with a bit of elbow grease, but some things were perfect as they were. We know the history of some things, especially some family pieces, but others pieces we love for the shape and function. A console table that our TV is on and most of our art were created by friends. It definitely has a collected over time look. In fact, three years ago, we sold one home and three potential buyers (including the eventual buyers) asked for at least some of the furnishings. Nope. I will say it takes a while to get your home to that place. It is almost impossible to do it all at once, unless you have an unlimited budget. It always evolves, even if you do not move to a new place. Choose things you love. If a piece speaks to you, that is your style or you new style. If you love it, it goes.
