October 20, 2023 - Adidas and the NHL will no longer be partnering on jerseys following the 2023-24 season as Fanatics will enter the fold, which means the Adidas “Reverse Retro” program is officially done.

As with any sequel, there are a few differences from the original. The 32 new Reverse Retro jerseys feature more white sweaters than the 2020 collection.

July 24, 2025 - For the second time since 2020, the NHL released Reverse Retro jerseys for each team in the league. Teams will wear these jerseys a handful of times throughout the season. Some teams have even released the games they will wear them in.

Among their inspirations are Manon Rheaume, the first woman to play in the NHL, who wore similar striping as a member of the Las Vegas Thunder of the International Hockey League. Washington Capitals (1997): The blue, black and bronze throwbacks reminiscent of Peter Bondra, Olie Kolzig and Calle Johansson get an update with the patriotic red, white and blue of the 2018 Stanley Champions. Winnipeg Jets (1979): The Jets wore similar jerseys in their first season in the NHL. The Reverse Retro takes the look worn by Dale Hawerchuk and gives it a twist combining the heritage plane crest and "Winnipeg" lettering with the updated Jets colors.

Two years and 32 designs later, the NHL Reverse Retro jerseys are here. The NHL and adidas unveiled the 2022-23 season jerseys on Thursday. Each jersey includes the signature NHL Authentic Shield, showcasing the retro orange and black colors, ...

The Reverse Retro uniform program will not continue into 2023-24, and with the change from Adidas to Fanatics next season, it may be gone for good. It will likely be replaced with whatever Fanatics comes up with when it’s their time.

The Calgary Flames shirt features the jersey logo of their ’90s embrace of black. Hard to tell, but the Dallas logo is their original shoulder patch logo, recoloured to replace the original gold with their modern silver. I’m not 100% positive this is part of the new NHL Reverse Retro line for 2022-23, but Fanatics is currently using that same “Special Edition” tag for all of their leftover Reverse Retro stock from the 2020-21 season.

March 26, 2023 - The NHL did say it was something they weren’t going to do a third time anyway, and they do own all the designs for them, not Adidas, so if a team wants to go back to one of the designs, they are free to do so, it just wouldn’t be under the banner of the reverse retro program, kinda like how Calgary did this season with their new alternate. ... The NHL is the dumbest major sports league. ... For real. What the fuck are they thinking? Do they even like hockey? ... Taken from their AHL farm team, the Abbotsford Canucks, the Canucks hit a home run with their reverse retro for 2022-23. NHL.com states it best: “Inspired by the Canucks’ 1962 uniform of the former Western Hockey League, the Reverse Retro jersey features a recreation of the 1960s Johnny Canuck icon on the center crest.
