Decisions between Rigid 12 gallon and 14 gallon Shop Vac
Everyone is saying “go big” but I’m gonna have to disagree. I went with the Ridgid 4.5gal Propack because all of the cords, hoses and attachments are self-contained inside of the vacuum. It’s much easier to store since it’s not an awkward shape and can stack on other stuff. Its also very easy to empty so the 4.5gal capacity isn’t the end of the world IMO. More on reddit.com

5 gallon vs 12 gallon wet/dry vac
Go with the 5 gallon. It will likely have a larger hose to be able to pick up larger debris. I have both a 5 gallon and a 2 gallon. The 2 gallon my wife used in her craft and sewing room to pick up small messes (fabric scraps and thread) and I use occasionally to clean up a small mess after finishing a small project (ex. drywall dust when installing a drywall anchor). The 5 gallon unit lives in the workshop where it is used to pick up mounds of saw dust and wood and metal shavings. The 3" hose prevents clogs and allows it to pick up larger messes. EDIT: Reading comprehension is hard...I read it as OP was looking at a 2 gallon and a 5 gallon vac, not a 2HP and 5HP vac. I still stand behind my recommendation. Go with the 5 Gallon, 2HP unit as it offers a good balance between portability and power. More on reddit.com

I have a 5 HP Rigid and a smaller Shop Vac. The one thing I like about the Shop Vac is they offer an optional disposable filter bag that makes for a cleaner transition between wet or dry use. The Rigid is fairly large at 12 gallons, but it was pretty cheap at Home Depot (on "Black Friday") a couple of years back, it has a lot of suction, and is very easy to drain after extraction or other "wet" uses.

I am in need of a shop vac for around the house for general use from home repairs/maintenance to kids messes. I lucked out for father's day and got a nice gift card for Home Depot. I am kind of stuck between the 12 gallon and 14 gallon Rigid shop vacs. The 12 gallon is $95 and the 14 gallon is $130.
Is the additional 21 CFM and 2 gallon capacity worth the $35 extra in price for the 14 gallon? This is my first shop vac purchase and I want to make sure I get the right one for my use. All help is greatly appreciated.

12 gallons of most vacuum friendly 'stuff' is already going to be heavier than I want to deal with. The extra 2 gallon capacity is useless to me. I'll also wager a guess that the extra 21 cfm will be pretty negligible, and might even guess that the two models use the same motor anyways

Hey friends
I'm a homeowner looking into purchasing a wet/dry vac for general handyness/DIY work, amature woodworking, plumbing problems, car cleaning, and just general homeowner business.
I'm looking at a 5 gallon 2 hp shop-vac model for $34 versus a 12 gallon 5 hp workshop model for $55. $55 is my price ceiling on this.
Do you think the 5 gal 2hp model can cut it? Or should I might as well ante up and get the 12 gal 5hp for another $20?

Edit : Looks like both of those deals are dead so now I'm looking at a 9gal 4.5hp ridgid model. I'll think on it for a couple hours but'll probably go this way. Thanks everyone. Stay handy

had the 12, worked well enough for odd tasks. wouldnt suggest going smaller. it eventually burned up and I picked up a 16g. Still not the uber vacs that cost 500+, but the 16g is decidedly nice, way more power and alot quieter. Also, the larger chamber means the filter stays a bit cleaner since there is more room for dust to settle.
