I mean I just don’t even agree with this a little bit at all. Like, to claim that the great curse that Willem Dafoe puts on Robert Pattinson lacks “rhythm and depth” when it has this terrified old-time sea-terror feel to it, one of the better depictions of weird-fiction style writing onscreen imo. And that’s just one example. Are you looking for purely realistic writing? Because it’s certainly not realistic, but I think it’s excellent. More on reddit.com

Authenticity. So lots of accents from the time. IMO his movies are not really horror, but more of a psychological thriller. Unfortunately they are marketed as horror. You might like Northman the most out of his flicks, I'd say that's the most mainstream. But I absolutely love his style and pacing. It's like the antidote to all of the other crap people watch. Just saw Nosferatu and I was thinking Robert Eggers grew up in a small town, didn’t go to a prestigious film school or come from money and only made 3 short films before he was given millions to direct the Witch how did he manage to get so successful with such little output and no prior connections?

He did attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC. Even though it's not only that, it definitely helped. And by the time he started working on The Witch, he already had good connections with people from the industry from his short films. And since clearly he has a very particular artistic style, these short films were a good way to prove to producers that he had the potential. After that, the millions of dollars for The Witch came from a lot of sources including 9 production companies, so that was a lot of hard work to find financing. And I'm pretty sure it wasn't picked up by A24 until it got noticed during its release at Sundance, after which it got more attention worldwide.

Visually, Eggers’ films are absolutely stunning — every frame feels meticulously crafted, aesthetically mesmerizing, and atmospheric. But once you look past the production design and cinematography, the substance feels surprisingly hollow. His writing and dialogue often lack rhythm and depth, leaning too heavily on superficial mood instead of genuine character development. The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman all look incredible, but the stories themselves just don’t hold up.
Does anyone else feel that Eggers’ films rely too much on their visuals to make up for weak writing? The cinematography is brilliant but I can’t say the same about the rest …

Saying Eggers’ films are “weak aside from the visuals” is like saying There Will Be Blood is just about oil. Eggers doesn’t chase plot twists or neat arcs. His writing is about tone, myth, and psychology. The Witch isn’t slow because it’s poorly written, it’s slow because paranoia eats that family alive. The Lighthouse sounds weird because madness doesn’t have rhythm. And The Northman isn’t “shallow,” it’s literally a Viking revenge myth told with the fatalism those stories were built on. It’s Macbeth, it’s the Lion King. Its a great fucking story. He’s not making typical Hollywood movies. He’s making folklore come alive, archaic stories that happen to move.

I am a big fan of horror movies, yet whenever I watch a horror movie directed by Robert Eggers I just don't understand why people are hyping them up? The ratings from critics and audiences are through the roof, but I do not get why at all. I get the cinematography is good, same with some of the acting, but the accents are too distracting where I need subtitles. I found the Witch literally unwatchable without subtitles. I have found nothing scary or creepy in his movies, so why are these movies so revered?
Can someone breakdown what is so good about these movies?
