r/RobinHood on Reddit: Options calculator like the one on RH?
April 25, 2018 -

Just got options going and am learning as I go. Are there any calculators similar to the one on RH where it shows your loss and maximum gains in "discovery" mode?

Its simple, I know, but useful a while learning and you stumble across an option.

Robinhood new options calculator.
Apparently. Launched yesterday. Robinhood now subtracts your cover calls money from your cost of ownership. Examples in photos. So essentially after a few weeks it will say that I own the stock for $0 or negative money. Am I out of my mind to think this is horrible or is this good? More on reddit.com

How do you calculate call options?

An call option's Value at expiry is the amount the underlying stock price exceeds the strike price. The Profit at expiry is the value, less the premium initially paid for the option.

Value = stock price - strike

Profit = (value at expiry - option cost) × (number of contracts × 100)
_______= ((stock price - strike) - option cost)
_________× (number of contracts × 100)

The Breakeven at expiry will always be higher than the underlying stock price at the time of purchase and is the strike plus the option price.

Breakeven price = strike + option cost

To calculate profit prior to expiry requires more advanced modelling.

The price corresponds primarily to the probability of the stock closing above the strike price at expiry. This can be generalized to both call and put options having higher extrinsic* premium for strikes closer to the current stock price, longer-dated expiries, and higher stock volatility.

Profit = ((stock price - strike price) - option cost + time value)
Profit = × (100 × number of contracts)

*extrinsic premium is any cost above the intrinsic value

You can use our calculator above, which uses the Black Scholes formula to estimate the value of a long call purchase before or at expiry.

How much do you make on call options?

There is no cap on the maximum possible profit using a long call strategy, and profit increases linearly with the rising price of the underlying stock. Loss is generally limited to the initial value of the option paid.

What is the break-even price for an option?
The break-even price is the stock price at expiration where your option trade results in zero profit or loss (ignoring commissions). For a long call, the break-even price is the strike price plus the premium you paid. For a long put, the break-even price is the strike price minus the premium you paid. The stock must move beyond this point in your favor for the trade to become profitable.

May 3, 2024 - Break it down to the most simple way of looking at the trade and forget the roll for the moment. Step 1, how much credit did I initially receive for selling the options to open? Step 2. How much will it cost me to buy them back to close? So, if you sold the options to open for more than it cost to buy them back, that’s a profit.
