1 month ago - ROCm ships its installable client driver (ICD) loader and an OpenCL implementation bundled together. As of January 2022, ROCm 4.5.2 ships OpenCL 2.2, and is lagging behind competition. The AMD implementation for its GPUs is called HIPAMD.
Minimal requirements for ROCm support of AMD GPUs
Officially on the consumer side, only 7900 XT and XTX is supported as well as Radeon VII (don´t get that one, support will be dropped pretty soon i guess). ROCm 6.0+ on Linux though has support for many more RDNA2/3 cards enabled by default.. However the machine learning frameworks in their official builds (PyTorch, Tensorflow) don´t have these cards enabled.. You need to build them from source or get them from an alternative source where your card is enabled.. So today: You can make it work and things have improved quite a lot over the last year! July 21, 2025AMD ROCm 7.2 Now Released With More Radeon Graphics Cards Supported, ROCm Optiq Introduced
I had a perfectly working Strix Halo system with 7.9. I did an uninstall and install of 7.2 under Ubuntu. Now it's busted. Great. Update: I reinstalled 7.9 so things work again. The win though is that the new pytorch that goes with 7.2 still runs with it and performs better than the old pytorch. More on reddit.com

Hello. When trying ROCm, I learnt that not all GPUs are supported. I have RX 570, and, it seems, there was something uniqueabout RX 570 and 580 so they don't support ROCm. I am going to buy new AMD GPU, and want it to work with ROCm.
Can someone tell me AMD GPUs that right on bar of supporting ROCm? Does RX590 support ROCm?

The version added the "Radeon™ RX 7700 XT"* (* = Radeon RX 7700 XT is supported only on Ubuntu 24.04.2 and RHEL 9.6.)
For other GPUs and integrated graphics not officially supported (e.g. "gfx1150" and "gfx1151" aka Radeon 890M @ Ryzen AI 9 HX 370) we still need to wait for ROCm 6.5.0.
Otherwise use "HSA_OVERRIDE_GFX_VERSION" (downgrade e.g. from "11.5.1" to "11.0.0") to be able to use ROCm with your (integrated) graphics card. This works for other applications using ROCm but there are exceptions where it might not work (e.g. LM Studio on Linux - use Vulkan instead or LM Studio 0.3.19 Build 3 (Beta) which seems to support Ryzen AI PRO 300 series integrated graphics + AMD 9000 series GPUs).

Could add MAX+395 (8060s GPU, gfx1151 LLVM target) to the support wishlists? and I expected ROCm in WSL2 could detect the GPU. and currently ROCm 6.4.2.1 could be installed in WSL2 + ubuntu 24.04, but not detect the GPU.

To get acceleration with HIP RT you need support for RT in hardware, which is available since RDNA2 architecture (PR#135179). RDNA1 and older chips have no RT blocks in hardware. Also read this part of manual. For GCN5.1 use HIP from ROCm 5.3 - 5.7. Since Blender 4.3 AMD HIP is not available for acceleration with Cycles render engine for Vega GPUs (GCN 5.0, GCN 5.1) (commit).
