ROG Crosshair VIII Hero vs Formula

I have a VIII Hero (wifi) and basically the water blocks are what you are paying for on the Formula. They are very similar boards otherwise, Formula does have Aquantia 5gb ethernet and wifi. The VRMs are so good on pretty much all of the high end X570 boards most of them could run with little need for active cooling. If you are planning an all out water cooled build with an unlimited budget then you could grab the formula and water cool the VRMs just because. Otherwise you would be better off using the extra $200 for other components. Formula also has the little LCD screen. Both boards use the exact same VRM though and that's the main thing. Does anyone know if the ROG Crosshair VIII formula *has* to be water cooled?

Buy the CH8Hero if you dont want to water cool. Its only cooling on the VRM. Waste of money if you not going to fully kit out the motherboard. More on reddit.com

Hi All,

I am currently building a brand new computer. I have been weighing a lot of motherboards lately, but cam across the crosshair Hero and found it to be damn near perfect (I am not too concerned about budget).

While looking at reviews I saw that it had an bigger brother in the form of the Formula. However, I can't really tell what more I would get with going for the Formula over the Hero from the specs (besides the built in VRM water cooling). Is the Formula worth the ~200$ price increase?

I have run a 3950X overclocked with a chilled water loop using the VIII Hero. The VRM is extreme overkill and only gets mildly warm even with 0 active airflow on the VRM heatsink. (open air test bench) IMO the Formula is overpriced. The VRM waterblock is 100% unnecessary. If the little OLED screen and 5G LAN are worth $200 to you, then it's a perfectly good board. Otherwise, get the Hero.
