For anyone else having issues, if you're using this exact motherboard then ensure you are acquiring the WIFI motherboard's version of the BIOS, I was having major issues because I had acquired my BIOS for the CROSSHAIR VIII HERO, and not the CROSSHAIR VIII HERO WI-FI. I did all the other fixes, e.g. use diskpart, make it mbr, use a usb 2.0 thumbdrive set to fat 16 and 4GB. This was a beginner mistake but it did fix the issue for me. r/buildapc on Reddit: ASUS X-570 ROG Crosshair VIII Hero (WIFI) BIOS Flashback constantly failing
November 20, 2020 -

Hi, so I recently started my new pc build with a ryzen 5900x using this mobo and I need to flash the latest bios for the board to be compatible. I originally put the whole PC together but got Q-Code number 2 on start-up which means "AP initialisation before microcode loading" im relatively sure this was because the cpu wasn't compatible with the current bios but feel free to correct me if wrong.

Now because I don't have another previous gen AM4 CPU im going to need to use the bios flashback tool on my mobo which is fine and dandy but that doesn't appear to work either and there seems to be little to no troubleshooting guides for this dodgy feature online so I came here to ask you good folk if there is anything that im missing here in the flashback process or anything I can try to make it work.

So far I have tried:

  • Cleaning the drive and wiping everything on it as per a user guide on the ROG forums to make sure there is nothing left as traditional windows format won't do the job

  • Using a usb under 32gb (mine is 8gb) and formatting as fat32

  • Downloading the latest bios from the official asus page for my mobo and loaded the renamed .CAP into the root of my usb

  • Unplugged and removed absolutely all cables/headers/io connections from the mobo so it was just the 24pin main power on standby and the usb plugged into the "BIOS" labelled USB port on the back

  • I then attempted to load the new BIOS onto the mobo by switching the psu on and holding the "BIOS" button for 3 seconds however every single time I try it flashes 3 times and then turns into a solid light that just stays there indicating that it can't read the USB/File?

I don't understand as it seems im meeting all the requirements for this to go smoothly but the board won't detect anything from the USB at all. If anyone could provide a hand I would really really appreciate it as im at a loss for words and I don't know what to do

Should I update the BIOS on my Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Hero ?
I was wondering if there is any merit to updating the bios on this board.. I don't really have many performance issues, sometimes but hard to tell if its windows or some other program causing it. I'm pretty behind, my last update on anything with the motherboard was back in 2020. Along with... More on forums.tomshardware.com

How to BIOS flashback on Crosshair VI Hero?
USB stick, format 32, rename your bios you need to flash to C6H.cap or use the asus bios renamer tool from asus, Put this file on the root of the usb stick, then put the usb stick into the correct USB port for flashback, press the flash back button, if all goes well it should start blinking until the flash is complete. Note ASUS flash back does not always work with all USB sticks...ie for my C6H C7H I only have 1 out of all my sticks that will work with flashback. No it should not need a cpu. Sign it is done flashing is the blinking will stop and the blue flashback circle light will go out. If it only blinks 3 times and stays lit it did not work. Flashback takes 10 to 15 minutes so be patient as long as the light is blinking it is working. More on reddit.com

Asus ROG CROSSHAIR VII HERO BIOS Flash failure
Of oll the things, it was my psu that was partially dead. Swapped it with a spare of the same type, and boom. Booted again. What are the odds that my psu died when I powered it down for a bios update 🤷‍♂️ More on reddit.com

r/AMDHelp on Reddit: Asus ROG CROSSHAIR VII HERO BIOS Flash failure
December 3, 2019 -

Hi, I tried r/techssupport but no response there, so I try my luck here.

My setup is using a 2700X ryzen atm, but I bought an 3900X and while waiting for it to arrive I tought I'd upgrade my BIOS to support my incoming cpu.

So I downloaded from asus the latest 2901 bios, formatted a USB stick using Fat32.Then used the renamer tool to rename bios file to C7H.CAP, trasferred the bios file.Powered off my computer, then sticking the pen into usb slot marked BIOS.

Held the flashback button for 3 seconds until it started blinking blue, and usb sick indicates it's being read from.

Waiting until led on motherboard goes off, then for safety waited some more just to be certain.

Removed the stick and pressed the power button, then nothing :P

Tried powered it completely off then on, but still nothing.

Onboard Start switch lights ut, and RGB leds are flowing trough all colors. But nothing happens when I press start.

I've tried several usb sticks, several different version of bios. Even tried clear CMOS button. But nothing seems to help.

So, my question. Anyone got some good ideas? Or should I just go ahead and order me a 570 motherboard?

r/ASUSROG on Reddit: FYI Crosshair VIII Dark Hero Bios Update
March 27, 2024 -

Just in case anyone was thinking of upgrading their am4 crosshair viii dark hero board to bios 4805 that released a few days ago, it breaks the ability to control the board LEDs such that ‘off’, ‘black’, ‘dark’, etc. is bright green. Breaks any aura designs you have that include the board. A few stock ones work but almost everything resolves to static bright green.

I downgraded back to 4702 and the issue was completely resolved. Just wanted to post it because I didn’t see anyone else who struggles with obsessive compulsive tendencies post about it on any of the boards I read.

I hope this helps someone
