Hi, so I recently started my new pc build with a ryzen 5900x using this mobo and I need to flash the latest bios for the board to be compatible. I originally put the whole PC together but got Q-Code number 2 on start-up which means "AP initialisation before microcode loading" im relatively sure this was because the cpu wasn't compatible with the current bios but feel free to correct me if wrong.
Now because I don't have another previous gen AM4 CPU im going to need to use the bios flashback tool on my mobo which is fine and dandy but that doesn't appear to work either and there seems to be little to no troubleshooting guides for this dodgy feature online so I came here to ask you good folk if there is anything that im missing here in the flashback process or anything I can try to make it work.
So far I have tried:
-
Cleaning the drive and wiping everything on it as per a user guide on the ROG forums to make sure there is nothing left as traditional windows format won't do the job
-
Using a usb under 32gb (mine is 8gb) and formatting as fat32
-
Downloading the latest bios from the official asus page for my mobo and loaded the renamed .CAP into the root of my usb
-
Unplugged and removed absolutely all cables/headers/io connections from the mobo so it was just the 24pin main power on standby and the usb plugged into the "BIOS" labelled USB port on the back
-
I then attempted to load the new BIOS onto the mobo by switching the psu on and holding the "BIOS" button for 3 seconds however every single time I try it flashes 3 times and then turns into a solid light that just stays there indicating that it can't read the USB/File?
I don't understand as it seems im meeting all the requirements for this to go smoothly but the board won't detect anything from the USB at all. If anyone could provide a hand I would really really appreciate it as im at a loss for words and I don't know what to do

Have a Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Hero Wifi 6 X570. Upgraded to a Ryzen 5900 and NEED to use the flashback to update Bios to the latest. Previous cpu is dead so not an option. Followed the steps to the T. FAT32 file system with the C8H.CAP file renamed and plugged to the USB port labeled bios and pressed the button while PSU is on but system is OFF. I've tried every USB type their is, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, etc. Nothing is working. Formatted to FAT32. Nothing. Removed the CPU completely as to avoid the USB bug that exists with it. NOTHING. The most I get with it is three blinks and a solid blue light that stays on until the end of time. Put cpu back in everytime to test if it worked just for giggles ans I still get an 0d code.
So for MSI boards I've seen detailled instructions on this subreddit. I'm going to need to use BIOS flashback on my C6H since I have a Zen 2 CPU but and old BIOS. Unfortunately the ASUS instructions are very rudimentary.
It does nowhere state the prerequisites. Do I need to put in a CPU? Do I need to put in RAM? Do I need to only power ATX or also CPU? What is the sign of a completed flash procedure? And so on :)
Anyone have experience with this?
I just built a new computer with Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Hero (wifi) and a Ryzen 5950X, but the computer stops booting after showing the Press F2 or Del flash screen. It will not enter BIOS. I have tried multiple keyboards on multiple USB ports.
I figured it might be the BIOS version having a conflict with my CPU, so I tried using the USB BIOS Flashback utility where you plug a USB stick into a specific USB port marked BIOS and press the BIOS flash button on the back of the motherboard until it starts blinking.
The result is that the button blinks a few times, then goes solid blue and nothing happens. The activity light on the USB stick also blinks once.
I have the correct filename (C8H.CAP), using the 2702 version of the BIOS, as indicated here, nothing else on the USB stick, formatted to FAT32, file in root, no other partitions, I have tried with a USB2 and USB3 stick.
I also have a post Q code 02 which means "AP initialization before microcode loading". I have seen that might indicate a power issue, but I can't figure out what that could be. My GPU, CPU and 24 pin are all connected as they should be and the PSU has worked fine in my old computer.
Am I missing something obvious here?
Hi, I tried r/techssupport but no response there, so I try my luck here.
My setup is using a 2700X ryzen atm, but I bought an 3900X and while waiting for it to arrive I tought I'd upgrade my BIOS to support my incoming cpu.
So I downloaded from asus the latest 2901 bios, formatted a USB stick using Fat32.Then used the renamer tool to rename bios file to C7H.CAP, trasferred the bios file.Powered off my computer, then sticking the pen into usb slot marked BIOS.
Held the flashback button for 3 seconds until it started blinking blue, and usb sick indicates it's being read from.
Waiting until led on motherboard goes off, then for safety waited some more just to be certain.
Removed the stick and pressed the power button, then nothing :P
Tried powered it completely off then on, but still nothing.
Onboard Start switch lights ut, and RGB leds are flowing trough all colors. But nothing happens when I press start.
I've tried several usb sticks, several different version of bios. Even tried clear CMOS button. But nothing seems to help.
So, my question. Anyone got some good ideas? Or should I just go ahead and order me a 570 motherboard?
Hi there,
I am trying to update my BIOS for the last two hours now and can't get it to work.
I followed the guide on the Asus website, watched tutorials on Youtube and searched the internet for answers. But I still can't update the BIOS.
As the guide demands I use an USB 2.0 flashdrive (FAT 32, MBR) that only contains the .cap file that I renamed with the rename-tool. The only thing that is attached to the motherboard is the 24 pin power connector. I flip the switch on the PSU, wait a second for the RGB to turn on, put the flashdrive in the designated USB port and hold the Flashback button until it starts blinking.
When the flashback comes to stage 2 (the small screen on the motherboard tells me that it is in stage 2) it does something for a minute and then tells me "BIOS Flashback not completed".
I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. Does anyone know a fix?
Thanks in advance!
Edit: I tried it with the 8 pin cpu power cable being connected too and having the stick in the port before flipping the switch. The issue is still there.
Edit 2: I tried it with another USB stick. I also tried an older version of the BIOS (Version 2311) with both the sticks. The problem persists.
Edit 3: I had to return the board. I now have a new one and it works absolutely fine. I guess the old one was just broken. Sorry if you ran into the same problem as I did and hoped to find a fix here.
Just leaving this here incase it helps anyone else.
Needed to update a recently bought ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero X570 (non-wifi) to be able to use x5000 series CPUs.
First few attempts after following directions to put properly renamed via biosrenamer.exe .CAP file on USB were unsuccessful and produced a solid blue light after holding down the bios flashback button for three seconds/three blue blinks. (note: no cpu or ram attached to the board)
What ended up making it work was needing to do a bit more of an involved format job, windows device format alone wasn't effectively automatically reducing the USB to a single partition. This is actually a pretty critical step to ensure the motherboard reads the usb stick.
Not entirely necessary to format to FAT16, but that's what I tried at first. To do so, I used diskpart to remove the extra partition that was appearing, and also ensuring a single partion remained of size 4000 on it (command for this using diskpart with the proper partition and disk selected: "create part primary size=4000"). and then, going back to windows right-click format tool, formatted to FAT16 (also just called FAT) ensuring a single partition of size 4000 on it.
Just a possible solution to try for anyone else who has been frustrated by this.

Current Bios: 0804
So after trying to get the memory (that runs on 2133mhz) to actually run at 3000, I noticed that this PC's bios version is still on 0804, which is from around 2018. Because later versions are known to increase memory stability, I figured updating the BIOS to the latest version would be a good idea.
I have been rather unsuccessful at updating the BIOS to the latest version 4901 though. I'm using a freshly formatted FAT-32 29GB USB Stick, in the correct BIOS USB port at the back of the Motherboard.
I've renamed the file correctly to C7H.CAP, but the EZ Flash utility keeps giving the ''Selected file is not a proper BIOS'' message.
I'd figured I try the DHCP option, and download the BIOS directly from my current BIOS, which I should add, wasn't the same BIOS as I downloaded from the ASUS website. It was a older version if I recall, I didn't note the actual version down.
Even that doesn't work, I still get the ''Selected file is not a proper BIOS'' message.
I've read a few topics about issues looking like these, a lot of people were using wrong BIOS type, but I'm definitely sure this is the correct one, there are for example no WIFI versions of this board that I know of.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
SOLVED:
So the solution in the end, was to update the bios in steps, as u/Trader_Tea said in his comment down below.
I updated in the following order: 0804 -> 1103 > 2008 > 3103 > 4901
BIOS version 3103 and 4901 had to be renamed to C7H.CAP.
In between every update, I tried updating to the latest version, but it kept resulting in the ''Selected file is not a proper BIOS'' message, up until after I installed 3103. I also did a chipset driver update before attempting this.
Just in case anyone was thinking of upgrading their am4 crosshair viii dark hero board to bios 4805 that released a few days ago, it breaks the ability to control the board LEDs such that ‘off’, ‘black’, ‘dark’, etc. is bright green. Breaks any aura designs you have that include the board. A few stock ones work but almost everything resolves to static bright green.
I downgraded back to 4702 and the issue was completely resolved. Just wanted to post it because I didn’t see anyone else who struggles with obsessive compulsive tendencies post about it on any of the boards I read.
I hope this helps someone
Just updated to Version 4004 2022/02/22 20.65 MBytes
ROG CROSSHAIR VIII HERO BIOS 4004
"1. Update AMD AM4 AGESA V2 PI 1.2.0.6b
2. Improve system performance and stability
Yet now it completely skips every single prompt to open the BIOS. It skips directly into windows.
reset your cmos with button on the back of the bored
Try resetting CMOS. I had issues after this bios update as well. It wiped my grub partition and I had to rebuild it so that I could dual boot into both Arch and Windows.
4005 beta is also out which apparently fixes the Aura Sync bug.
