Hi, my keyboard broke last night, it was an alienware keyboard. I'm trying to find the best possible keyboard that I can buy right now, specifically ROG because I heard that their keyboards are very good, which is the best ROG keyboard that I can buy right now, regardless of the price.
Let's start by saying that I generally like ROG products. I love their designs and some of their features.
I 100% agree that Armoury Crate sucks big dicks but this is not the reason I'm making this post. Also because you can download it, set whatever you want and then remove it. Quite sub-optimal, i know, but bearable.
I used to be a ROG Falchion owner with Cherry RED switches and it was my favourite keyboard. But after 3 years of use it started glitching hard (some keys stopped working, others got many wrong inputs...). Tried changing switches but that was not it. In the end I concluded it was probably a board problem.
So I looked for a new keyboard. I found out that they are not making Falchions anymore. Or at least not what I'm looking for: a wireless small form factor gaming keyboard.
I also looked at other brands and I also bought an Akko keyboad (5075B plus). I don't agree with what is usually said online that the "gaming" branding is only a marketing bs. I found that gaming keyboards actually have some quality of life features that are not common on keyboards meant for office use (nor are even something that you can see in data sheets). For example, if the keyb goes to sleep, the Akko keyboard needs some seconds after the first stroke before actually responding in an acceptable time. And this is just one of many things I will not list here.
So I went back at ROG and I bought an Azoth after watching some reviews. Tried it myself for now 3 months and now I'll cut to the chase: the switches are horrible. And I don't mean they don't feel good. I mean they don't work properly. They have a ton of double clicking issues. And if you think this won't affect your gaming experience you are wrong: if I hold down the W button to go forward on an FPS game, sometimes it registers a very brief input, then a little pause and then it register a full press. This means that if I'm sprinting in COD for exemple, I start the run then my character stops for 0.1 secs and then starts moving again (not running of course because now I need to press shift again to initiate the run). This also happens with strafe keys. So this issue WILL get you killed in games and you WILL find it very annoying.
It's not an issue only to my unit but it's widespread. Just google "Azoth double clicking" and you will se what I'm taking about.
I tried everything: updating the firmware, switching switches around, even downloading the keyboard chatter blocker. They seem to work for like 2 days then another key starts acting up.
The ONLY thing that worked was buying third party switches and swapping them in. Luckily they are hot-swappable.
tl;dr: switches suck and double click. If you consider a ROG keyboard, consider the cost of entirely replacing them
